Title: The High School CRES

1
The High School CRES
  • How to Use and Assess the Portfolios

2
I think animal testing is a terrible idea they
get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Definitions
  • Working Portfolio The working portfolio is a
folder for students to house all of their
formative writing. Practice BCRs and drafts of
ECRs, plus other writing for the course, will
    appear here.
  • CRES Showcase Portfolio The CRES Showcase
Portfolio pulls together the students summative
writing. County assigned BCRs, final ECRs, and
    timed writings will appear here.

4
What counts as a BCR for the working portfolio?
  • Responses that address reading indicators can be
    scored using the BCR rubric
  • Examples include oral responses, speeches,
    group presentations, student discussions,
    drawings, completed graphic organizers, projects,
    written responses
  •
  •

5
What counts as a BCR for the CRES Showcase
Portfolio?
  • Written response to the secure BCR questions
    provided by FCPS

6
What counts as an ECR for the Working Portfolio?
  • Any written text produced by students may be
evaluated for written expression or language
    usage.
  • Examples include poems, short stories, essays,
    journal entries, letters, speeches, proposals,
    written BCRs, research papers

7
What counts as an ECR for the CRES Showcase
Portfolio?
  • Any formative ECR from the Working Portfolio may
be removed and submitted to the CRES Showcase
Portfolio as evidence of mastery of the writing
    and language usage indicators

8
What Does Not Change?
  • The CRES still counts for 20 of the course
    grade.
  • There will still be a category called CRES in
    Pinnacle.
  • Grades are reported on Pinnacle at mid-term and
    end-term.
  • BCRs, ECRs, Timed Writings, and Language Usage
are scored using familiar rubrics and anchors.

9
What Else Does Not Change?
  • Students revise their ECRs and choose the best
ones to include in their CRES Showcase Portfolio.
  • Timed Writing procedures do not change at all.
  • Students are assigned Writing and Language Usage
scores based on their final ECRs and Timed
    Writings.

What Does Change?
  • Portfolio Use Teachers will maintain both a
working portfolio and a CRES Showcase Portfolio
    for each student.
  • BCR Requirements Students no longer choose their
four best BCRs per term to average together for
    a Reading score.
  • Now, Frederick County requires that students
write two specific BCRs per term. These BCRs
are based on indicators taught in that course,
and chosen in advance by the county.

12
What Else Changes?
  • Teacher Selection of BCR Texts For each BCR
assigned, teachers will select an appropriate
text to accompany the question. Texts selected
should represent the enrolled grade level and
    enrolled course level.
  • Rubric Percentage Equivalents These have been
adjusted to align with HSA rigor and standards
    (4100 387 274 161 NS48).

13
More changes
  • BCR LU Rubric Percentage Equivalents These
have been adjusted to align with MSA rigor and
    standards
  • 4100
  • 387
  • 274
  • 161
  • NSR48

14
Advantages of the Changes for Teachers
  • The number of BCRs per term required for the
portfolio drops from four to two. Averaging is
    no longer required.
  • The use of two portfolios places emphasis on the
working portfolio as an instructional tool to
help student reading, writing, and language usage
    achievement.

15
CRES Showcase Portfolio Contents
  • Midterm
  • BCR 1
  • BCR2
  • Writing Score 1
  • LU Score 1
  • These scores are derived from two ECRs and one
Timed Writing placed in the CRES Showcase
    Portfolio
  • Endterm
  • BCR 3
  • BCR4
  • Writing Score 2
  • LU Score 2

16
Best Practices Advice
  • Consider how you will establish and maintain your
    working and CRES Showcase Portfolios.
  • Plan to use your working portfolio as an
instructional tool to maximize student growth.
  • Assign frequent practice BCRs to prepare for the
    formal BCR assessments.
  • Assign more than two ECRs (four or more!) to
allow students to have a real choice as to which
ECRs move to their Showcase Portfolios.
  • Set up your Pinnacle CRES category and enter your
BCR grades in a timely manner to avoid the
    end-of-term crunch.
