What is CAREB?

  • Represent the interests of all Canadian REBs
  • Reflect their perspectives and concerns

  • Build a Community of REBs in Canada
  • Provide a forum for discussion of common
    challenges and issues

  • Evolution and revision of TCPS scope and

  • Resource implications of compliance with the TCPS
    and MOU for REBs and institutions

    Canada
  • What will be the roles of existing organizations?
    (NCEHR, HC, PRE, CAREB)

    institutions?
  • How will this affect non-biomedical REBs?
  • REBs need to be key players in the discussions
    from the outset

  • Accreditation is coming
  • Why is it needed?
  • What could it look like? i.e. voluntary or
    mandatory?
  • Who will do it?
  • Will it include all REBs and what impact will it
    have on REBs responsibilities?
  • REBs must be active partners in developing any
    accreditation process

Tri-Council Policy Statement - revision
  • The Panel on Research Ethics Secretariat
    (PRE-SRE) is mandated to ensure the evolution and
    revision of TCPS
  • Every decision will impact on REBs and their
    resources
  • Decisions must be appropriate in terms of
  • Health regulations
  • Disciplinary diversity (humanities, social
    science, behavioural science, health science,
    bio-medical, natural science etc.)
  • Feasibility of implementation
  • REBs know feasibility best
  • REBs can help define priority issues
