4Facts
- Cote dIvoire is a country in the west of Africa
which produces more than 35 of the worlds cocoa
crop. - In 2001 reports confirmed widespread child labour
on cocoa farms Cote dIvoire and thousands of
children being trafficked from nearby Mali and
Burkina Faso. The conditions these children were
working in were characterised as dangerous and
they were forced to work long hours. - Industry said they would guarantee the end of
trafficked labour in the cocoa industry by 2005.
They have failed to do this. They said they would
cover half the farms in Ghana and Cote dIvoire
by 2008, but even this did not make sure all
farms are free from using trafficked children. - They said it was too difficult.

8On the very first day, he farmer took our
luggage and locked it away. He ordered us to move
heavy sacks of cocoa. They were so heavy I could
barely lift it. One boy could not lift his
sacks. The owner took a branch off a tree and
started whipping him. He beat him until all his
body was covered in cuts and blood. At that
moment, I know he would beat us, too ...(Sylla,
15 year old boy) We have never tasted chocolate
