How does school promote participation in PE

• SCHOOLS HAVE TO
• In 1992 PE became a compulsory subject in schools
• It became a legal requirement for schools to
  follow the National Curriculum (NC) in PE
• WHAT DO THEY DO
• Timetabled lessons (2 hours per week at Ralph
  Allen)
• Offer the full range of activities as set out in
  NC
• Offer exam based courses (GCSE/A level/JSLA)
• Offer opportunities to adopt different roles
  (umpires, coaches, organisers, choreographers)
• Employ specialist teachers of PE

• What is meant by extra-curricular sport?
• It is provision made in addition to the normal
  school timetable
• For example
• Lunchtime/after school clubs
• Clubs
• Teams

• This can have a dramatic effect on pupil
  motivation/performance
• Staff need to be
• Positive/enthusiastic
• Experienced in the activities they are teaching
• Have adequate playing ability
• Experienced
• Interested in the activity
• Staff need to promote links to outside clubs and
  local sports providers eg. Bath rugby club, Bath
  Leisure centre Year 11 have the option to use
  Bath Leisure centre.
