Title: Technology for the 21st Century Classroom

1
Technology for the 21st Century Classroom
  • Teaching to the Digital Native

2
Immigrant or Native?
  • Are we digital immigrants or digital natives?
  • What are your students?

3
Digital Immigrants - Do I have an accent?
  • Encyclopedia or Wikipedia?
  • Users manual or plug play?
  • Print your e-mail or save in folders ?
  • Edit documents on paper or on screen?
  • Share interesting website in person or send URL?
  • Do you make the Did you get my e-mail? phone
call? (and do you still dial a phone?)

The digital immigrant adapts to the new
environment, but retains their accent, their foot
in the past.

college where all the professors came from MIT,"
says a former student. "But all they did was read
    from their textbooks. I quit."

  • Create Goal-based scenarios
  • Use your own experiences, your passions, to

    http//www.curriki.org

Immigrants become natives by assimilating the
culture.
16
Goal-based Scenarios
  • When creating a GBS, a designer goes through
    these six steps
  • 1. Identify a set of target skills
  • 2. Develop Missions which require the target
    skills
  • 3. Choose a Focus
  • 4. Create a Cover Story which envelops the
    Mission
  • 5. Plan the Operations
  • 6. Build learning environments to support the
    target skills

17
Project-based Learning
  • In project-based learning, students work in teams
to explore real-world problems and create
presentations to share what they have learned.
Compared with learning solely from textbooks,
this approach has many benefits for students,
including Deeper knowledge of subject matter
    Increased self-direction and motivation
    Improved research and problem-solving skills.
