3
Introduction
  • Uptake of Semantic Web technology by industry is
    progressing slowly
  • Academia is not always aware of the concrete
    problems that arise in industry
  • Industry is not often well informed about the
academic developments that can potentially meet
    its needs

We bridge the gap by creating a virtuous feedback
loop between industry and research, including
education and training

  • Use Case Collection

5
Industry Board
  • 50 companies
  • 14 countries
  • 12 sectors
  • Health
  • Telecom
  • Automotive
  • Food
  • Media
  • Banking
  • Technology

6
Use Case Acquisition Process
  • We sent a short questionnaire to each industry
    board member asking for input
  • We collected further details and wrote up the use
cases in consultation with industry during the
    followed up face-to-face meetings

7
Use Case Collection
We have collected 16 use cases in 2004
  • Recruitment
  • News aggregation service
  • Product lifecycle management
  • Data warehousing in healthcare
  • B2C marketplace for tourism
  • Digital photo album management
  • RD support for coffee
  • Agent-based system for insurance
  • Daimler Chrysler Semantic Web portal
  • Integrated access to biological data

B2C Marketplace for Tourism Design
  • Knowledge processing tasks components as
plausible solutions to the identified technology
    locks
  • Matching Match Manager
  • It aims at on-the-fly and automatic determination
semantic correspondences between the contents of
C/S Ps and the global schema
  • Primary task It ensures semantic homogeneity at
    schema level among C/S Ps
  • Results Reconciliation Results Reconciler
  • It aims at detecting redundancies, duplications,
..., among the data coming from different C/S Ps
involved in the processing of the request of a
    user
  • Primary task It ensures accurate way of
    accessing the requested data

Typology Library
Most tasks repeat over use cases, suggesting
stable typology

Summary
  • Industry board
  • Use case collection
  • Technology locks coming from use cases
  • Industry requirements as a typology of knowledge
processing tasks and a library or high level
    components for realizing those tasks
  • Direct research towards industry requirements
    focusing on promising areas
  • Healthcare
  • Service industry

21
Transfer to Industry in Action
  • Be pragmatic realize the Semantic Web step by
    step
  • European Semantic Web research is working hard
  • to meet industrial requirements underway
  • Industry members provide a concrete testbed for
    the evaluation of research results
  • tools, ontologies, methodologies, ... underway
  • Support for technology migration industrial
    training
  • adapted courses to practitioners underway
  • First phase of results
  • concrete technology transfer to industry... early
    2006

22
  • All Knowledge Web resources, namely
  • use cases, success stories, industrial events,
    tutorials, recommendations,
  • can be found at
  • http//knowledgeweb.semanticweb.org/o2i
  • Access to some content is restricted to
  • industrial board members,
  • of course you are welcome to join
