What so important about Publishing a Document?

• A document is not complete without being
  published
• Typically 2 ways to publish a document
• Desktop printer
• Commercial printer

Plan for Publication

• The physical aspects of your final product will
  typically determine how you publish your final
  product.
• Page size, binding properties, number of colors,
  number of pages, etc.

Publication Methods

• Your desktop printer is useful when you need a
  few copies of your publication within a tight
  budget
• A copy shop is good when you need a large amount
  of copies in a hurry.
• Can usually assist with basic stapling and
  folding of your publication
• Use a commercial printer if you have a larger
  budget and want the highest quality product
  possible.

Perform Prepress Checks

• Make sure you spell check and proofread your
  publication for errors.
• Red a good book tonight. will pass a spell
  checker, but it is still incorrect.
• ToolsgtDesign Checker
• Will help you find design problems that might not
  be obvious to the user.
• Print out a proof, or sample copy, of your
  publication before you print all copies or send
  it to a commercial printer.

Set Properties for Desktop Printing

• Print properties are the setting that control the
  way that your publication prints on the printer.
• Printer specific options are available
• Print specific options come from the publication
  or the publication document

Prepare a Composite and Color Seprations

• Composite proof an accurate copy of the
  publication
• Separations Printouts showing the layout of
  each color, CMYK, for process color printing and
  each spot for spot color printing.

• Print options are different for each printer

Save a File for Commercial Printing

• You needs to save your publication in the correct
  file format to send it to a commercial printer.
• FilegtPack and GogtTake to a Commercial Printer
• Many printers ask for files in PostScript format,
  which is available in Publisher.
• To save in this format you must have a PostScript
  printer installed.

Deliver Files to a Commercial Printer

• Usually can be done via the Internet or via
  delivery in CD or DVD format.
• Must deliver all fonts and graphic to the
  printer, which is why Pack and Go is useful.
• Might want to compress the files in your
  publication if you have a lot of them or they
  have a large total file size.
