The Year of the Horse

• I was born in Canton, China on August 2, 1978,
  the Year of the Horse.
• According to the Chinese Zodiac

• Horses are intelligent, friendly, hard-working,
  and independent.

• Horses are also a bit selfish.

• My mother is fond of saying that she didnt give
  birth to me.
• Apparently, I was found in a rice paddy as a
  baby.
• My sister is fond of saying that she dropped me
  on my head as a baby.

Canada, eh?

• When I was a year old, my family immigrated to
  Canada.
• We moved to Vancouver, British Columbia.

• This is the only time Ive ever been on an
  airplane.

Why My Name is Sally

• Prior to starting school, I got to pick my own
  English name.
• I had a choice between Sharon and Sally.
• I thought Sally was easier to say.

My Childhood

• I was quiet and shy as a child.
• I had an imaginary friend.
• I spent a lot of time reading.

My Teens

• In high school, I was in a program for gifted
  and talented students.

• I was always feeling behind in my course
  readings.
• So I felt guilty when I read for fun.

• I sure fooled them!

University Days

• Ive completed two degrees at UBC so far.

• In 2000, I completed a B.A. in General Arts with
  a concentration in English.

• In 2001, I completed a B.Ed. after doing my
  practicum in a primary-level Montessori classroom.

• I met my husband in the last term of the B.Ed.
  degree.
• He was finishing off the same program.

Marriage

• After a short courtship and a long engagement, I
  married my husband on July 18, 2003.
• We had a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the
  lighthouse on Mayne Island.
• Im glad it didnt rain.

• Taking care of my black bamboo plant
• Quilting
• Worm composting

My Career as a Teacher

• I got my first contract because of my Montessori
  teaching experience.

• Teaching is a lot of work!
• After only two years, I was starting to burn out.

• I needed a change!

Off to SLAIS

• So here I am at SLAIS.
• I gave up a full-time job to be here.
• I hope Ive done the right thing.

Future Plans

• To get an MLIS degree
• To spend more time with my husband
• To have the neatest, most organized, most
  well-stocked library in the whole world!
