Do you agree or disagree?
  • Leaders of a church youth ministry should not
worry about youth in the church who are not
interested in the youth ministry. The parents
are responsible for the spiritual growth of their
children, so they should work hard at getting
their children to the youth ministry activities.

The Tipping Pointby Malcolm Gladwell
  • The tipping point is the point at which an idea
    becomes an epidemic. Characteristics
  • 1.Contagiousness
  • 2. Little causes that have big effects
  • 3. Change that happens not gradually but at one
    dramatic moment.

7
The Magic Number 150
  • p. 179 the figure of 150 seems to represent the
maximum number of individuals with whom we can
have a genuinely social relationship, the kind of
relationship that goes with knowing who they are
and how they relate to us.

8
Ministry Continuum
  • Pre-evangelism - Evangelism -
  • Follow-up - Discipleship/Teaching
  • - Service/Leadership/Multiplication

9
1. The goal of ministry in the body of Christ is
to equip every Christian to serve others and
exercise their gifts.
  • Ephesians 411-13 11 It was he who gave some to
be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be
evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
12 to prepare God's people for works of service,
so that the body of Christ may be built up 13
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the
knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,
attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of
    Christ.

10
Every Christian has at least one gift
  • 1 Peter 410-11 10 Each one should use whatever
gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God's grace in its various forms.
11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one
speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves,
he should do it with the strength God provides,
so that in all things God may be praised through
Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power
    for ever and ever. Amen.

2. Leaders are a distinct group clearly
delineated in Scripture.
  • Position in the local churches
  • Hebrews 1317
  • Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.
They keep watch over you as men who must give an
account. Obey them so that their work will be a
joy, not a burden, for that would be of no
    advantage to you.

13
Giftedness
  • Romans 126-8
  • 6 We have different gifts, according to the
grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying,
let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If
it is serving, let him serve if it is teaching,
let him teach 8 if it is encouraging, let him
encourage if it is contributing to the needs of
others, let him give generously if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently if it is
showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

16
Why would you target youth as leaders?
17
LEADERSHIP
  • Leadership is any attempt to influence the
behavior of another individual or group. Paul
Kersey in The Situational Leader, p. 16
  • Steve Johnson the capacity to influence others
    to bring about change

19
LEADERSHIP
  • Individuals not only routinely regress in times
of stress, they also regress in group settings.
If you do not believe this, watch a Lions Club
meeting or college reunion. One aspect of this
regression is the phenomenon of dependency on the
    leader.

20
  • It is quite remarkable. Assemble any small group
of strangers-say a dozen or so-- and almost the
very first thing that happens is that one or two
of them rapidly assume the role of group leader.
It does not happen by a rational process of group
    election it just happens naturallyspontaneously
    and unconsciously.

21
  • Why does it happen so quickly and easily? One
reason, of course, is that some individuals are
either more fit to lead than others or else
desire to lead more than the rest. But the more
basic reason is the converse most people would
    rather be followers.

22
  • More than anything else, it is probably a matter
of laziness. It is simply easy to follow, and
much easier to be a follower than a leader. There
is no need to agonize over complex decisions,
    plan ahead, exercise initiative, risk
unpopularity, or exert much courage. (p. 223)
Scott Peck, People of the Lie

23
What does a leader do?
  • Makes decisions
  • Plans ahead
  • Exercises initiative
  • Risks unpopularity
  • Exerts courage

24
What does a leader do?
  • Serve others by meeting needs
  • Love is joyously using your resources to take
the initiative to sacrificially meet the need of
another person because you are loved by God. 1
    John 410,11 Jeremiah 923,24 2 Corinthians
