Intro

• Do you know how big hurricanes are? You
• probably dont, so read our report to find
  out. You will find out names of hurricanes and
  what causes them.

Destroy

• A hurricane can destroy lots of things. It can
  destroy buildings, wreck cars, tear down
  telephone lines, topple trees, boats sink and
  just about any small thing can be flying in the
  air. Hurricanes can even kill people, so if you
  see one- stay out of its way.

• There are all different kinds of names for
  hurricanes. The letter to start the name goes in
  alphabetical order but no names start with
  q,u,z The names can be French, Spanish and
  English.

• The names repeat themselves unless a very big and
  destructive hurricane comes. If so, the name of
  that hurricane retires.

• Hurricanes are the biggest tropical storm ever.
  A hurricane is 30km or 425 jumbo jets parked end
  to end. They are 10 miles high and 300-600 miles
  wide. The outer part of the hurricane is 40mph.
  The middle of the hurricane goes 74 mph, and the
  inner part of the hurricane goes 120-150mph.

• The center of a hurricane is called the eye. The
  eye is very quiet and calm. The winds are at
  least 74 mph, and it can go up to 225 mph. In
  one second a hurricane can be as powerful as 10
  atomic bombs!

• A hurricane can last 2-5 days. Hurricanes are
  put into five different categories. If a
  hurricane flies over a warm ocean it gets bigger.

Causes

• Do you know what causes a hurricane? Well, a
  large mass of air is heated up and rises. Next,
  it starts to swirl. Another cause is if there
  are warm fast winds over the ocean. It gathers
  heat and energy through contact with warm water.
  When this happens there will be roles of water
  vapor on the sea surface.

Interesting Facts

• Tornadoes are like hurricanes but they are much
  smaller and a lot faster winds They are both
  whirlwinds. In Japan the people call hurricanes
  typhoons. In Australia they call them Willy
  Willys. When a hurricane is over the Indian
  ocean they are called cyclones. Hurricanes form
  within 1000 miles of the equator.
