4Under Water Weighing
Error Not consistent
w Body density Body mass Body volume
w Body mass is measured on land.
- Body volume
- Measured using hydrostatic (underwater) weighing
- Accounts for water density and air trapped in
lungs
w 2-3 margin of error
This is an information slide with animated arrow
and font differences.
5Skinfold fat thickness
Error Too wordy
- Percent body fat is determined from the
relationship between skin fold thickness and body
density. - From skin fold thickness a formula is used to
calculated body density. The body density is then
used in another formula to estimate percent body
fat. - The equations used to determine body density and
percent body fat need to be gender, age and race
specific. - With skinfolds there is a 3-4 error compared to
under water weighing - Other errors occur from not measuring skin folds
at the correct location, pinching the skinfold to
hard, not pinching a true skinfold, using
inaccurate calipers, etc.

6Bioelectric Impedance
- Measurement of body water.
- Impedance or (resistance) decreases with body
water. - Assumption that body water is at a constant
value. - 3-4 error
This is an information slide with a sound inserted
7Air Plethysmography
Autoshape
Error Not aligned
BOD POD
- Similar principle as UWW
- Air instead of water
- Comparison
- Error 2-3
- Costly
- Convenient for subject
- Low tech skills
8Air Plethysmography
9Duel-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)
- Developed to measure bone density
- Can measure bone, non-bone, and fat density
- New gold standard?
- Comparison
- Error 1-5 (software)
- Very costly
- Very high tech
- Quick, subject friendly
