2Imagine these three images are buildings. What
do you think they would look like? How do you
think changes in painting and sculpture will
affect architecture?

3Context 19th Century Architecture
- Advances in construction materials allowed for
new kinds of structures in building. - The use of iron and steel allowed for vast open
spaces within buildings. - These innovations led to the first skyscrapers.
4Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926)
- Gaudis buildings have been described to look
like they were molded from clay. - Gaudis personal style was derived from his
native culture in Spain. - Because of the difficulty in construction,
Gaudis buildings usually took many years to
construct.
5Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926)
- Why do you think Gaudi designed this church to
look this way? - How do you think La Sagrada Familia represents
Gaudis influences?
6Gustav Eiffel (1832 - 1923)
- Eiffel was one of the leading engineers in the
design and construction of structures during the
late 19th century. - The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Expo in
Paris in 1889 and was the tallest building in the
world at the time of its construction. - Due to new advances in iron construction, the
metal skeleton became a popular feature of
architectural design.
7Gustav Eiffel (1832-1922)
- Why do you think Parisians disliked the Eiffel
Tower so much when it was first constructed? - Why do you think Eiffel chose to only show the
skeleton of the towers structure?

8How do you think St. Peters would look if Gaudi
had designed it?
St. Peters Basilica, Rome
9If you were to redesign the Eiffel Tower for a
21st century World Expo, how would it look?
What would you change? What would you keep
the same?
10Which do you think has more effect on developing
styles of architecture trends in art or
trends in building innovations?
