TIPS FOR USING THE LIBRARY
  • Your Panther Card is required to enter the
    library
  • Youll need a log-in to use the computers in the
    library - Ask at the ref desk for assistance
  • Galileo (state of Georgia) databases require a
    password to use them from home
  • GSU databases from home require your name and the
    barcode from your Panther Card (20785..)

GIL (http//gil.gsu.edu)
  • Lists everything we have books, videos, compact
    discs, dvds, maps, periodicals, government
    documents.
  • Lists only the titles of the periodicals we
    subscribe to ( you cant search for a periodical
    topic).
  • Allows you to search by keyword or subject for
    books, etc. on social problems.

SEARCHING FOR ARTICLES
  • Always start with the LIST OF DATABASES on the
    librarys home page www.library.gsu.edu
  • Choose a subject category from the drop down box
    or choose a specific database by clicking on the
    alphabet you need
  • Click on the i and read about the database
  • How many years does it cover?
  • Does it include the full text of the article?
  • What subjects does it cover?

SOCIOLOGICAL COLLECTION
  • One of the databases that indexes articles and
    some books (subset of Academic Search Premier)
  • Includes popular as well as scholarly articles
  • Can be limited to scholarly articles, only or
    full text articles, only
  • Can be limited to a certain range of years

SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS
  • THIS PREMIER SOCIOLOGY DATABASE CONTAINS ONLY
    SCHOLARLY MATERIAL
  • IT INDEXES ARTICLES, DISSERTATIONS, CONFERENCE
    PAPERS, BOOK CHAPTERS,REVIEWS, WEB SITES, etc.
  • ITS LINKED TO THE LIBRARYS ONLINE CATALOG and
    the Electronic Journal Locator.

Find it _at_ GSU Finding the Full Text
  • The Find-it _at_GSU button is in almost every
    database.
  • Clicking on it tells you whether we have the full
    text of the article that you want or whether we
    have a print subscription (3rd floor Library
    North).
  • If we dont have either, you can request a copy
    through ILLIAD.

FINDING AN ARTICLE IN PRINT
  • Take the citation (title of article, author,
    volume number, page numbers and date).
  • Search by the TITLE OF THE PERIODICAL in GIL (the
    online catalog).
  • Write the call number down and go to the 3rd
    floor.
  • Retrieve the article from the bound volumes.

Finding the Full Text of an Article in the
E-Journal locator
  • Type in the NAME OF THE JOURNAL
  • How many databases are listed?
  • Do they have the year (s) that you need?
  • Click on the database that you need
  • Type in the TITLE OF THE ARTICLE

  • For items we dont have, fill out the online form
    on the librarys web page.
  • Youll be notified when the article arrives.
