9Leadership is learned.
- Are leaders born or made?
- We are all born. What we do with what we have
before we die is up to us. - Leadership is an observable set of skill and
abilities.
10Leaders make a difference
- Person to person and over time, leaders make
difference.
11First lead yourself
- Leadership development is self-development.
- The quest for leadership is first and inner quest
to discover who you are. - Learning to lead is about discovering what you
care about and value.
12Moral Leadership Calls Us to Higher Purposes
- Leadership is amoral but leaders are moral or
immoral - Higher purposes through establishing moral values
- Great leaders must have done some soul searching
- Daily decisions are infused with purpose when
ones principles are clarified
13Moral Leadership Calls Us to Higher Purposes
- Organizational life is stormy, so a personal
creed is a necessary point of reference - Leaders take people where they have never gone
before - The most critical knowledge of all is
self-knowledge - Explore the inner territory to step out into the
unknown
14 Morality in Action
- In the Washington Post, on Sunday, November 13,
2005, the Dalai Lama, while giving a talk on
science and morality is quoted as having said -
- "It is no longer adequate to adopt the view that
our responsibility as a society is to simply
further scientific knowledge and enhance
technological power and that the choice of what
to do with this knowledge and power should be
left in the hands of the individual, By invoking
fundamental ethical principles, I am not
advocating a fusion of religious ethics and
scientific inquiry. Rather, I am speaking of what
I call 'secular ethics' that embrace the key
ethical principles, such as compassion,
tolerance, a sense of caring, consideration of
others, and the responsible use of knowledge and
power -- principles that transcend the barriers
between religious believers and nonbelievers, and
followers of this religion or that religion."
15Humility is the Antidote to Hubris
- Virtues can become vices
- Power and importance are seductive
- Humility is the way to resolve problems
- We are human need the help of others
- Pride and pretense may lead to short-term
success, but long-term weakness - Self-effacing humor sincere credit to others
lead to higher performance levels - Leaders do not have to be perfect, but they must
be humble and unassuming
16 Humility in Action
- Upon returning to India from South Africa, where
Gandhi had enjoyed a successful legal practice,
he gave up wearing Western-style clothing, which
he associated with wealth and success. He dressed
to be accepted by the poorest person in India,
advocating the use of homespun cloth (khadi).
Gandhi and his followers adopted the practice of
weaving their own clothes from thread they
themselves spun, and encouraged others to do so.
While Indian workers were often idle due to
unemployment, they had often bought their
clothing from industrial manufacturers owned by
British interests. It was Gandhi's view that if
Indians made their own clothes, it would deal an
economic blow to the British establishment in
India. Consequently, the spinning wheel was later
incorporated into the flag of the Indian National
Congress. He subsequently wore a dhoti for the
rest of his life to express the simplicity of his
life.
17Leadership is in the moment
- It is easy to think too much of oneself to miss
the simplest leadership opportunities - Everyday we can make a small difference
- Say thank you more often
- The deepest craving of human nature is the need
to be appreciated. William James, 20th cent.
Psychologist/Philosopher - Listen better
- The first duty of love is to listen. Paul
Tillich, 20th century Theologian/Philosopher - Be positive toward people
- I think it's an honor to be a role model to one
person or maybe more than that. If you are given
a chance to be a role model, I think you should
always take it because you can influence a
person's life in a positive light, and that's
what I want to do. That's what it's all about.
18Secret to Success in LifeLeadership is an
affair of the heart, not the head
- Leaders must keep hope alive in order for their
constituents to maintain courage in the face of
troubled times - Hope is essential to achieving the highest levels
of performance - When things are bad, we take comfort in the
thought that they could always be worse. And when
they are, we find hope in the thought that things
are so bad they have to get better. Unknown
Author - If you wish to succeed in life, make
perseverance your bosom friend, experience your
wise counselor, caution your elder brother, and
hope your guardian genius. -17th/18th cent.

19Staying in love is the key to sustaining
leadership over time
- One must stay in love with leading, with the
people who do the work, with what ones
organization produces, and with those who honor
it by using the organizations products - Too often we underestimate the power of a touch,
a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest
compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of
which have the potential to turn a life around.
Leo F. Buscaglia, American guru Advocate of
loves power - When the power of love overcomes the love of
power, the world will know peace. Jimi Hendrix,
20th cent. Rock Music Legend
