  • Penn State University
  • Fall 2006

2
Defining the Teaching Methods and Connecting to
My Blue Print Components
3
Presentation
  • The teacher provides guidance through
presentation of rules and examples, application
and/or practice, mnemonics devices, and provides
feedback related to the immediate task.
  • In this stage, the teacher is in control of
    presenting the concepts.
  • The Presentation teaching method provides facts,
concepts, procedures, and principals of the
    concept.
  • Presentation focuses attention on key points
through the use of graphic organizers,
    demonstrations, or other related activities.
  • According to Merrill, in this stage, students
    remember, use, and then find.
  • According to my elements list, this step would be
called, the Acquisition Strategy because it links
    prior knowledge to new knowledge.

4
Question
  • The teacher moves from the role of presenter to
    the role of developing inquiry.
  • The teacher asks questions, provides context,
draws on previous knowledge, provides help, and
    gives feedback to the discussion.
  • Students discover connections.
  • According to my elements list, this stage would
be called, Asking Essential Questions and connect
    with the Activating Strategy.

5
Active Learning
  • In this stage, the student is actively involved
    in constructing meaning and personal
    understanding.
  • The students work includes using graphic
    organizers and manipulating the objects.
  • The students are active participators and develop
a deeper knowledge of the concept.
  • According to my elements list, this stage would
    be considered Refining and Accelerating.

6
Collaboration
  • In the collaboration stage, students work
together to reach a common goal.
  • Students need to consider ideas other than their
    own through investigative activities.
  • According to my elements list, this stage would
be considered, Acquisition of Knowledge and
could be combined with Extending and Refining.
  • Collaboration could also be used as Acceleration
and Remediation in that collaboration permits
students to consider perspectives other than
    their own and the teachers.

7
Role Playing
  • Students have the opportunity to respond as
adults would in a given situation.
  • Role Playing is Authentic!
  • Role Playing allows students to investigate,
extend, and refine their knowledge base.
  • Role Playing allows students to apply their
knowledge and understanding of the topic.
  • Role Playing allows students to develop solutions
    to the given problem.
  • According to my elements list, this stage would
be included in Extending and Refining.
  • Role Playing could also be used as a summarizer.

8
Problem-Based Learning
  • Presents students with real world problem
    solving situations.
  • Students are encouraged to find logical solutions
    to the problem at hand.
  • According to my elements list, this stage would
    be considered, Extending and Refining.

9
My Strategy Ideas
10
My Presentation Idea
  • My Topic Asthma A Common Disease
  • (science curriculum connection)
  • To introduce the topic, survey the class to see
how many students know someone with Asthma.
(Students will not be encouraged to share
    personal information).
  • Use a K-W-L Chart to discuss what students know
about Asthma and what they want to learn.
  • Using questions from the students K-W-L Chart,
begin to develop a list of essential questions.
  • Distribute a list of at least 5 websites that
discuss causes, symptoms, and treatments for
    Asthma.

  • Have students find additional valid websites that
    relate to the topic.

12
Question

13
Active Learning
  • After students review the provided websites and
essential questions, students will be given time
to further research the sites to locate valid
    answers to the questions.
  • Encourage students to record additional questions
or facts of interest that were not discussed in
    the essential questions.

14
Collaboration
  • Students will work in pairs to discuss their
    findings.
  • (Science Curriculum Connection)
  • Are their answers similar? Why? Why Not?
  • Students will need to arrive at a common
conclusion for each question by discussing their
findings. Students will reference each finding
with one of the provided websites.
  • (Computer Curriculum Connection)
  • How was the information presented within the
    different websites?
  • Which websites were the most helpful? Why?

15
Role-Playing
  • Pretend you are a medical doctor who has been
asked to present information on Asthma at a
    convention.
  • Create a PowerPoint slide show that will address
all of your essential questions. (See Project
    Requirements Sheet for more details).
  • Additional Questions
  • What is preventative care?
  • How does preventative care relate to Asthma?

16
Problem-Solving
  • Once your PowerPoint slide show is created, think
about how you would professionally present it to
the group. (Visual Idea Dress up as a Doctor).
  • Your presentation can only be 5 to 7 minutes in
    length.
  • Things to consider
  • How are you going to make sure you dont exceed
    the given time limit? (PowerPoint)
  • Is your PowerPoint slide show going to include
    video clips and illustrations?
  • How are you going to involve your audience in
    your presentation?
  • What technological equipment will you need to
    present your PowerPoint Presentation?
  • Are you going to need internet access during your
    presentation?
  • How are you going to summarize your material?
  • Dont forget to include a K-W-L slide that
    represents your learning.
