New England
  • Hilly land, rocky soil, and a jagged coastline.
  • Summers were mild and the winters were cold.
  • Many people living in the New England colonies
made a living by fishing, shipbuilding, or
    trading.
  • Villages and the church's were the center of life
for the religious reformers and separatists who
    settled there.

10
Mid-Atlantic colonies
  • Had coastal lowlands with deep and wide rivers.
  • Rich farmlands were in the area, and the climate
    was moderate, or changeable.
  • People made a living by raising livestock and
    growing grain.
  • Business of the Mid-Atlantic colonies took place
    in the market towns.

11
South

12
South Atlantic Coastal Plain

  • Cash crops were important to the economy.
  • There were large farms and plantations.
  • Many people had smaller farms.
  • On plantations you would find slaves.
  • There were few cities and few schools
  • People of the South belonged to the Church of
    England.
  • For important business, people would come to the
    county seat.

13
Relationship between the Colonies and England
  • PART 3

14
English taxes and trade
  • England controlled the trade in colonies.
  • Colonies were taxed by England to help pay for
the French and Indian War. (Stamp Act)
  • Taxes helped to pay for the British troops left
    in the colonies.
  • Colonies traded raw materials (tobacco) for goods
    made in England.
  • England wanted the colonies to trade only with
    England or English colonies.

15
Colonies became dissatisfied with English rule
formany reasons.
  • Colonists had no representation in Parliament,
    the English lawmaking body.
  • Colonists felt that the colonial governors had
    too much power.
  • England was strictly controlling the colonial
    legislature.
  • The Proclamation of 1763 said that the settlers
could not move into land west of the Appalachian
    Mountains.
