How they form
  • A noreaster is produced by when the warm
currents from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of
    North Carolina.
  • Since the water is warm in these currents there
is warm air above the water causing low pressure.
  • While this is happening cold winds come down from
Canada causing high pressure moving clockwise.
  • The low pressure system continues to move up the
coast while the high pressure moves around it.
  • The high pressure begins to pick up the moisure
from the high pressure. And forms clouds.

Damage Caused
  • Can cause local flooding
  • Strong gale winds (47-54 mph)
  • Gale winds cause light structure damage
  • A lot of deaths occur because of cold weather
  • Bring several feet of snow
  • Pounding surf
  • Swells damage Caribbean
  • Cause beach erosion
  • A lot of damage to beach front property

4
Characteristics
  • While noreasters is passing over head there is
dark, thick low in altitude clouds
  • During one storm there could constant
precipitation usually frozen or there could be
    mist
  • High winds
  • Very rarely there could be an eye (similar to
    hurricane)
  • Low pressure
  • Could form several smaller storms coming together
    like

This chart shows the progression of a Nor'easter
and how the pressure changes.

Marble Question
  • Why cant noreasters form in the summer?

7
Answer
  • The noreasters cannot form in the summer because
the air in Canada is cold enough that means there
is not enough pressure for them to form.
