Title: Native Americans
1Native Americans
2Analyze Learners
The intended age is 6-7 years old and first
grade. My first graders have previously learned
skills such as phonics. They know little about
phonics but know about the alphabet. They are in
the beginning stages of reading.
3State Objectives
- GM.1.4.2 - sing American folk songs.
- SS.1.5.3 - identify characteristics of the past
and contributions of heroic people using sources
such as stories, folk tales, pictures, poems,
songs, legends, holidays and customs. - RLA.1.1.14 - establish purpose for reading (e.g.,
for information for pleasure to identify a
specific viewpoint).
- RLA1.1.17 - increase amount of independent
reading. - VA.1.4.2 - discuss and compare how art can
represent cultures or groups. - MA.1.1.10 - model addition and subtraction of
whole numbers using 18 or less items and write
the corresponding number sentence. - MA1.3.1 - draw and describe triangles, squares,
circles, and rectangles according to number of
sides and vertices.

5Websites Used
- Coyote and the Money Tree - This site provides an
online animated story that the students can read
by themselves. It also has a puzzle at the end of
it. To solve it they have to answer questions
about the story. - Alta Vista This site is to provide pictures of
teepees. I will need to show the students
pictures so that they get a better understanding
of what the Indians lived in and get a sense of
what they looked like. - EMusic This site provides music that the Native
Americans called the Hopi Rainbow dance. The
students can get an understanding of why the
Indians used these at ceremonies. - EMusic - This site also provides music that the
Native Americans call the Medicine dance. The
students can also get an understanding of why the
Indians used these at ceremonies.
6Day by Day Lesson Plans Day One
Day One incorporates social studies. I will
introduce to the students what Indians lived in.
I will do this by showing them pictures of
teepees online. They need the understanding of
this because as a class we are going to create a
life size teepee.
7Day Two
Day Two involves the art of music. I will play
the Native Americans traditional Hopi Rainbow
dance and also the Medicine dance. The students
will understand the Native Americans beliefs and
how they lived. I will also teach to the students
how to do these dances and what their purposes
are. (Hopi and Medicine Dance Website)
8Day Three
- Day Three will instill independent reading. Ill
do this by having the students get online and
read the Coyote and the Money Tree story by
themselves. They will need to solve a puzzle at
the end of this story by answering correctly
questions about the story. We will also read the
Rainbow Crow by Nancy Van Laan together as a
group. (Coyote and the Money Tree Website)
9Day Four
- Day Four involves art projects. This art lesson
involves the story Rainbow Crow from the previous
day. We will create our own Rainbow Crow poem
book. This poem book is about their favorite
color and how it makes them feel. Each student
will get a worksheet to address their favorite
color. I will collect them and bind them into a
book.
10Day Five
- Day Five will incorporate math. The students will
learn about different geometry shapes by doing a
worksheet I will pass out. These worksheets still
involve Native Americans in the fact its called
Pottery Geometry. The students will also learn
their numbers 1-10 in the worksheet labeled
Picture Problems. This worksheet uses Native
American symbols as the numbers.
11Require Learner Participation
In being a teacher you have the responsibility of
teaching. You have to do so in such a way that
the students enjoy it, interested, and on task.
If you dont do so your students will fail at
being properly educated. You can keep them
interested in many ways. Make sure that the
lessons you teach are not just book work. Have
hands on projects and get the students involved.
Create fun environments that will pull the
students to want to learn.
12Evaluation
- GM.1.4.2 The lesson on Native American
traditional dances can be evaluated easily. When
teaching the students the dances I can observe
them to see if they understanding and
participating in the activity. - SS.1.5.3 I can assess the students by asking
them if they can describe and pick out what the
Native Americans used as homes. I can ask them to
tell me the differences in their homes compared
to the Native Americans homes. - RLA1.1.14 When reading the Rainbow Crow I can
use many different types of assessment to see if
they understand. When reading I can pass out
three different posts-it colors. I will then ask
the students what they think will happen in three
different parts of the book. If their answers are
way off I then know they do not comprehend what I
am reading to them. - VA1.4.2 In the Rainbow Crow poem book I can
view their worksheets that they filled out as
assessment. Also in making a life size teepee, I
can assess the students by observing to see if
they are participating and know what to do. - MA.1.1.10 and MA.1.3.1 For assessment in math I
can check their two worksheets that they did to
see if they understood their math lesson. If more
than half of the class did them wrong I know I
will have to go back and teach that skill to them
again.
