Title: The Universe
1The Universe
Millican Earth Science B-DAY
Notes
Slides 1-8
2- The Universe is a vast expanse of space which
contains all of the matter and energy in
existence. - The Universe contains all of the galaxies, stars,
and planets. - The exact size of the Universe is unknown.
3- Scientists believe the Universe is still
expanding outward. They believe this outward
expansion is the result of a violent, powerful
explosion that occurred about 13.7 billion years
ago. - The Big Bang.
- By looking at an object's electromagnetic
spectrum, scientists can determine if an object
is moving away from Earth or towards Earth. - If the shift is toward red, the light given off
by the object is in longer wavelengths. When an
object moves away from Earth, the light that it
is giving off is seen in longer wavelengths. - Red Shift
4- When an object moves toward Earth, the light that
it is giving off is seen in shorter wavelengths.
This causes a shift in the object's spectrum
towards violet. - Blue Shift
- Whenever there is a shift in a spectrum, it is
called a Doppler Shift. The amount of shift in an
object's spectrum is determined by how fast the
object is moving. All of the distant galaxies
have tremendous red shifts. Based on these data,
scientists believe the Universe is still
expanding outward.

28- Comparison with the Cancer symbol, the Crab
- A crab is able to walk or run sideways.
Similarly, Cancer natives can sometimes "move
about" in life, in a figurative sense, in an
indirect manner. The crab's body is covered by a
carapace (shell). Cancer natives are
self-protective and sensitive, and often retreat
into themselves when hurt. Crabs are able to
resist changes in the environment, thereby
protecting themselves from hostile elements in
various habitats. Similarly, Cancer natives are
thought to avoid too much change, and to be on
the defensive. Crabs have "complex behavior
patterns" (1). The inner world of Cancer natives
is thought to be rather quirky and complex. Some
crabs "conceal themselves by decorating their
bodies with plants and animals" (2). Cancer
natives tend to try to blend in with their
environments, preferring not to make a big splash
in life. - Cancer's glyph, or symbol, may represent the
breasts as a symbol of the nurturing qualities of
the sign.
29Planet Ruler
- The Moon, in Astrology, is the ruler of Cancer.
The Moon represents our deepest personal needs,
our basic habits and reactions, and our
unconscious. - Where the Sun acts, the Moon reacts. How do we
instinctively react or respond to problems? What
do we feel we need for a sense of security? Look
to the Moon in your natal chart for answers. - The Moon ( ) is associated with the mother and
with feminine energy in general. The Moon is both
our inner child and our inner mother. It is
responsive, receptive, and reflective. The Moon
is our spontaneous and instinctual reactions. - Just as the Moon circles the Sun, in a
symbolically protective manner, and reflects the
Sun's light, the Moon in our chart shows how we
protect ourselves, as well as make ourselves feel
secure, comfortable, and safe.
