4Mostly I love hangin out with my mates having
fun. We get up to all sorts of mad stuff, riding
our bikes, making ramps for our skate boards and
playing soccer. Oh yeah Im also in Scouts.
5Being invested as a scout is so special.

10I have a couple of heroes, and I want to be like
them. Thats one of the deadly things about
Scouts you get to try things out just like your
heroes. These are my two top heroes
11Tom Crean. Hes so cool
12Cian, hes my Scouter. Hes deadly.
13Tom and Cian have so many things in common.
- They are determined.
- They are fair.
- They make things happen.
- They are prepared for most things.
- They always try to help other people too.
- When the going gets tough you can count on them.
I guess sometimes they are scared too. - They love the environment.
- They really work well with other people.
- They always try to do their best.
- And so much more..
I really look up to them.
14Scout Boffin Trevor explains this stuff much
better than me. But I warn you hes sooooooooo
boring. I mean on a boring scale hes at 10
15When young people have adventures or participate
in community action projects that they have
planned and organised themselves, first and
foremost they have fun and also learn to
challenge themselves physically and
intellectually, whilst at the same time they
explore their emotions and spiritual nature. As a
result they develop better social skills through
the development of friendships and interactions
with others, and a sense of responsibility to
themselves and their community. Ultimately they
grow as people with well rounded characters and
make the world a better place.
16I did warn you, didnt I! Go on Trev you mad
yoke!!!
17Scouting Ireland enshrines this belief in its
Aim.
18We use a thing called the Scout Method to do this.
19Hmmm and I thought it was all about fun and
adventures
Oh heres another deadly dudess. Emmas her name.
20Thanks Spike. Im Emma Im the Patrol Leader of
the Celt patrol. I guess you met them earlier.
21We try to get together at least once a month at a
patrol meeting to plan our activities and set our
goals
22Its my job as PL to bring the Patrols ideas to
the monthly Patrol Leaders Council. Our Scouter's
also go along, so they can help us make our ideas
really happen. We come up with all sorts of crazy
plans every month. Especially Spike.
23Its not only my job to ensure that all the
ideas that the kids come up with are legal, moral
and safe but to encourage them to learn from
their experience. And to encourage them when they
get frustrated or stuck. As a leader team we try
to identify all the learning opportunities for
the young guns. Its important that they
challenge themselves on all sorts of levels. Here
have a look.
24Here are the gang on camp. Theres a lot going on
25- Heres Neil hes learning about
- The environment hes learning that we only use
old dead wood. - Hes participating in a physical activity.
- Hes also learning that in a group everyone has
to do their bit. - This is also Neils first time away from his
parents. Ever!!
26Amy and Sophie are learning all about teamwork
and cooperation. As well as challenging
themselves physically. They are also learning
some of the same things as Neil is learning about
the environment. Amy and Sophie live in different
parts of the town and come from very different
backgrounds so they are learning a lot about
themselves and each other.
27- Skye and Spike are learning about teamwork and
cooperation too. They are also learning all about
personal health and hygiene. Add to this all the
intellectual stuff they are learning about - Planning
- Design
- Construction
28Learning through experience is such a powerful
thing. Thats why activities in the outdoors are
so important.
29- When you camp in a Patrol its like a mini
community so the Trackers get to learn a lot
about - Personal responsibility
- Teamwork
- Cooperation
- Leadership
- Problem solving
- Getting along
- Conflict resolution
- Understanding each other and so on
30You can see that when they participate in an
activity the Patrol learn two sets of skills. All
those personal skills such as working together
and all the activity skills such as putting up
the tent.
31Thats why we have two elements to the
programme The Adventure Skills The Personal
Challenges

34By encouraging the young people to reflect on and
evaluate their own experiences we can help
maximise the potential for learning and help them
see how they can apply that leaning in the future.
35It sure aint easy but it sure is worth it. Its
how I feel I can use my skills and talents best
as an adult to help make the world a better
place.
36And thats got to be a good thing. Right?
