The Kingdom of God

• It is ushered in by Jesus
• (Mk. 115)

15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of
God is near. Repent and believe the Good News!"

• It is associated with authority and accompanied
  by power
• (Mk. 125-28 210-12 1 Cor. 420)

25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of
him!" 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently
and came out of him with a shriek.  27 The
people were all so amazed that they asked each
other, "What is this? A new teaching - and with
authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits
and they obey him." 28 News about him spread
quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins. He said to
the paralytic, 11 "I tell you, get up, take your
mat and go home." 12 He got up, took his mat and
walked out in full view of them all. This amazed
everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have
never seen anything like this!"

• Signs and wonders are an integral part of the
  Kingdom of God

• It is an intrinsic part in the ministry of Jesus
• (Mt. 935 Jn. 2030)

Jesus went through all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good
News of the kingdom and healing every disease and
sickness.

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the
presence of his disciples, which are not recorded
in this book.

• It is a dynamic part of the ministry of the early
  disciples
• (Acts 512-16 68 85-8 287-9)

12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs
and wonders among the people. And all the
believers used to meet together in Solomon's
Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even
though they were highly regarded by the people.
14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women
believed in the Lord and were added to their
number.

15 As a result, people brought the sick into the
streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at
least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them
as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the
towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and
those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them
were healed.

Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power,
did great wonders and miraculous signs among the
people.

5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and
proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When the crowds
heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did,
they all paid close attention to what he said. 7
With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and
many paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So
there was great joy in that city.

7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to
Publius, the chief official of the island. He
welcomed us to his home and for three days
entertained us hospitably. 8 His father was sick
in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul
went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his
hands on him and healed him.

Why are signs and wonders largely lost in the
Church today?

• A false dichotomy between Word and works

• The mind takes over and dominates

What must we do therefore?

• To recover the ministry of signs wonders

• To make it a normal and intrinsic part of church
  life
• (cf. Acts 242-47)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles'
teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled
with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs
were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers
were together and had everything in common.

to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they
continued to meet together in the temple courts.
They broke bread in their homes and ate together
with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and
enjoying the favour of all the people. And the

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private
and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 20 He
replied, "Because you have so little faith. I
tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as
a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,
Move from here to there' and it will move.

The power of signs and wonders

• It is the greater dimension to breakthroughs in
  doing good
• (Acts 936-42)

36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha
(which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was
always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About
that time she became sick and died, and her body
was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38
Lydda was near Joppa so when the disciples heard
that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him
and urged him, "Please come at once!"

39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he
was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows
stood around him, crying and showing him the
robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made
while she was still with them. 40 Peter sent them
all out of the room then he got down on his
knees and prayed.

Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha,
get up." She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter
she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped
her to her feet. Then he called the believers and
the widows and presented her to them alive. 42
This became known all over Joppa, and many people
believed in the Lord.
