Title: Seven Pieces of Wisdom for New Truckers

1
SEVEN
Pieces of
Wisdom for
New Truckers
2
King of the Road Few people get to see and
experience as much of the country as truckers do.
A life on the road can be very rewarding if you
heed the advice of seasoned professionals.
Knowing how to take charge of your career and be
well-prepared for the long ride, you can earn a
good living and feel satisfied with your work.
3
Do Your Research Before you sign up with any
company, research them first. Yes, you need a
job. Yes, you need to make money. But its not
worth working for a company that will run you
tired. Make sure they offer the benefits you are
looking for and ASK QUESTIONS.
4
Dont Flash With Your Bright Lights When
signaling to another driver you have safely
passed, do not flash your brights. Instead,
flicker your lights on and off. Flashing your
bright lights can impair another drivers vision,
making it a dangerous practice.
5
G.O.A.L. No one wise ever said backing up an
eighteen wheeler into a tight spot was easy. Heed
this warning now to avoid a VERY costly mistake
later never be embarrassed to Get Out And Look,
or G.O.A.L., especially when you are still
learning the ropes. So what if a seasoned pro
ribs you for taking all the necessary precautions
its your job and youre responsible for the
truck.
6
Keep Your Cool Truckers are usually the best
drivers on the road, and they experience their
fair share of dealing with others mistakes.
However, it is important to note road rage is
never the answer to another persons bad driving
or behavior. Make sure to get enough rest, learn
some deep breathing exercises, and remember, you
are responsible for your actions on the road.
Dont let a bad driver hinder your career.
7
Know Your Industry How much should you be paid
per mile? What about breaks and meals? Are you
responsible if theres an accident? If you dont
know these answers, you dont know your industry.
Learn your rights and responsibilities before
taking to the road.
8
  • Your Personal
  • Survival Kit
  • Dont forget to bring the things that make you
comfortable on the road. This could include
  • Multiple changes of clothes
  • Bathroom toiletries
  • Towels and wash cloths
  • Sleeping bag and pillow
  • An iPad or tablet, loaded with music, books,
    and games

9
Health Is Wealth A life on the road shouldnt
mean fast food and no friends. Its important to
be mindful of how you fuel your body and making
sure to take the time to connect with others.
Instead of sitting around and chewing the fat,
suggest a brisk walk to get the circulation
going. You wont be able to truck forever, but if
you treat your body well youll be able to do it
comfortably for a long time.
