  • A quick look under the hood of a car reveals a
maze of metal, pumps, belts, and hoses. Each
piece plays a role in keeping a car running. For
any vehicle owner, its important for upkeep and
safety to know the basics. Here is your guide.

3
  • Cars hold engines of varying power depending on
the make and model. The most common engine is the
    internal combustion engine, where combustion
happens internally and the burning of gasoline
powers the car. Engine technologies are
    constantly improving and evolving.

4
  • The spark plug is an important part connected to
the engine. It supplies the electrical current
that makes the spark that ignites the air and
fuel mixture for combustion to take place. The
spark must happen at just the right moment for
    the engine to work properly.

5
  • Valves control the flow of gases and fluids
    within the engine.
  • The intake and exhaust valves open at the proper
time to let air and fuel in, and to let exhaust
out. Valves are closed during compression and
combustion so that the combustion chamber is
    sealed.

6
  • A piston moves up and down inside the cylinder,
which is the central working part of the engine.
Piston rings provide a sliding seal between the
piston and the cylinder. The rings prevent the
fuel and air mixture from leaking during the
    compression and combustion process.

7
  • Several fluids contribute to the operation of a
car and they need to be checked regularly. Fluids
include coolant, transmission fluid, motor oil,
brake fluid, power steering fluid, and water.

8
Belts drive the water pump, power steering pump,
air conditioner, alternator, and emission control
pump. Hoses carry fluids, keep the engine cool,
and control power steering. If belts and hoses
break or wear, car systems malfunction and
problems arise.
9
  • The car battery provides electric energy to a car
and is rechargeable. There are different kinds of
batteries available with their own required level
    of maintenance.
