Title: Problems with Thatch and Its Solution
1A matted layer of roots, stems, runners,
blades, and clippings is called thatch. This
vegetative barrier can be ½ inch thick or more
depending on the soil condition. A thick thatch
layer is impossible to remove with a dethatching
machine, because such machines can barely
penetrate the thatch layer and may result in
tearing the grass right out of the soil. Usually
thatchtakesyears to develop on a lawn, but when
sodded lawns are not properly cared foryou can
get instant thatch. It happens we lay sod on top
of the soil and the sod doesnt root into the
soil deeply and quickly.
2Natures Lawn Garden
There are many reasons why thatch is undesirable.
One of the major reasons is that the grass roots
are up in the thatch and barely go inside the
soil. This is not a healthy state for your lawn.
It makes the grass highly vulnerableto drought,
insects and winter kill. If the grass is not
anchored in the soil properly, winter frost could
lift the thatch right out of the soil. It makes
your lawn weaker and it is only a matter of time
before it dies. Another reason is that a thick,
matted thatch layer acts like a sponge and
absorbs the rain andwatering. This wet layer
promotes fungus and disease. In addition, if the
thatch layer is thick enough that water cant get
through it into the soil, the soil eventually
dries out and the grass roots will grow into the
thatch layer. This will add more thatch layer
day-by-day.
3As we discussed previously,a power rake or
dethatching machine is not a solution for thatch
and will result in a torn up lawn. The real
solution to thatch is to improveyour soil
condition, so it is aerated and bioactive enough
to decompose the thatch. After decomposition,
thatch which is part organic matter, will break
down and turn into rich, dark humus. To achieve
this, you can treat the thatch with a biological
liquid lawn dethatcher. Such a product contains
specific microbes and enzymes especially
formulated to generate and accelerate thatch
decomposition. At Natures Lawn Garden, we
offer a100 natural and non-toxicliquid lawn
dethatcherwhich accelerates the decomposition of
thatchand maximizes healthy root growth. Contact
