  • If you are looking for a job in the law
    profession and you are just starting out, you
    should certainly register with a few agencies as
    well as scanning law magazines or approaching
    your current employers if you trained with them.
  • If you should approach London recruiters you will
    find that they may have vacancies for many other
    areas of the country. However if you are set on
    Legal jobs in London you may have a better
    salary, but accommodation and commuting can be
    very expensive.
  • There are skills involved to get you on the
    ladder and it would be good to know what they
    are. Competition is great in this area and you
    need to be able to convince a firm that you are
    the best for the job.

  • Apart from professional competence it is always
    very useful to have good people skills. I have
    seen many an unqualified person landing a
    fabulous job because they are good at handling
    people. Of course, it is important that you are
    nominated for an interview first. This may be
    the hardest part.
  • You know that in the legal profession many
    transactions and negotiations are done in writing
    and if you can make yourself understood clearly
    and concisely you will stand a better chance. You
    could mention what you have achieved this way
    when you are compiling your CV.
  • I have worked in many legal offices over the past
    years and one of the most awful things that I
    have come across is that organisational skills
    are often lacking. Desks were piled high with
    files and dead files were lingering in cupboards
    for a long time.

  • A good organisational skill to keep you on top of
    your work is, therefore, crucial. When you
    start, you will probably be given a few client
    files to help someone senior out. You can only
    concentrate well on one task at a time and your
    help will be invaluable in this department.
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills are
    very important. The latter is an art to improve
    and hopefully you have evidence in your CV to
    show this.
  • If you have registered yourself with a few
    agencies, you will get all the help you need in
    perfecting your CV and they will also give you
    helpful hints on how to conduct yourself during
    an interview. They have seen it all before and
    can pose questions to you that are likely to come
    up.

  • There could be some tricky questions amongst
    these such as what you will see yourself doing in
    a years time. You are new and you will have no
    idea how your life will pan out in this
    direction.
  • When you are working in a legal office there are
    always all kinds of information obtainable on how
    the law changes all the time. It will stand you
    in good stead to be aware of these and keep
    yourself informed.
