Title: Brief History of Dog Time
1A BRIEF HISTORY OF DOG TIME
2Did you know dogs and human beings have been
friends for thousands of years?
3Early men used dogs as their
assistants during hunting and for alerting them
of attacks.
4Since then, they have been selectively bred by
human beings as per their requirements
5For example, German Shepherds
were selectively bred for sheep herding
6And,Siberian Huskies were selectively bred for
sled pulling
7Though the evolution has been different in every
breed,
8each breed has been selectively bred to make
some characteristics dominant and the others
recessive
9The biggest change that the dog evolution has
brought is the control of their aggression.
10At present, dogs are much quieter and well
behaved
11Well, when we talk about their evolution, one
thing that comes to our mind is their evolution
from wolves
12 Dogs
Wolves
We have always thought that dogs descended from
wolves, havent we?
13 A DNA analysis published in 1997 suggests a date
of about 130,000 years ago for the transformation
of wolves to dogs.
Darwin was wrong. Yes!!!
14They are believed to have a common ancestor and
were genetically separated 34000 years ago
However, the domestication may have happened
twice producing groups of dogs that descended
from two unique common ancestors.
15Hence, the Siberian Huskies
HUSKY
GRAY WOLF
are genetically closer to other breeds than the
wolves living in the same Siberian region
16This Dogvolution is said to have been started
from the Himalayas.
A team led by Adam Boyko Conducted a genetic
research and found out that dogs from East Asia,
India and South-West Asia had high levels of
genetic diversity. This led them to the
conclusion that Dogs were first domesticated near
present day Nepal and Mongolia.
17Now, lets talk about evolution in major breeds
18Their primary purposewas to manage large flocks
of sheep, thus getting the name Shepherd
19Modern GSDs are criticized for not following the
original breeding purpose.
GSDs are now bred to be family companions,
show-dogs and military dogs.

This has been highly criticized calling the
evolution unnatural and calling them
half-dogs-half-frogs.

222. Golden Retriever
Golden retrievers were primarily used for
retrieving water foul. Modern day Golden
retrievers have evolved to become perfect family
companions and therapy dogs.
23Early golden retrievers ranged from medium gold
to dark gold to a "copper" gold.
However, Golden retrievers have evolved to have
lighter skin colors.Today, Golden Retrievers
range from cream to dark gold.
24Originally developed for retrieving purposes,
Golden Retrievers have evolved to be one of the
best family companions over time.

America - 1939 Growing popularity during WWII
- 1970 Surge in registration
- 1970 till present Modern day Golden Retrievers
263. Labrador Retriever
Labrador retrievers were primarily used for
retrieving by fishermen. Later, they were bred in
Kennel clubs to develop them as gun dogs and
retrievers. Modern day Labradors have evolved to
become perfect family companions and therapy
dogs.
27Originally developed as retrievers gundogs,
Labradors have evolved to be a very good family
companion and the most popular dog of the world.

304. Pug
Pugs are one of the oldest dog breeds. Earliest
pugs were developed in China 2400 years ago. Pugs
were selectively bred as a toy breed.
31And hence, they have evolved into a toy breed
The early pugs were much larger than the current
ones. Similarly, the noses of the early pugs were
different from the current ones that are quite
pushed inward.
