  • There are many kinds of deformities from the
normal foot which lead to aberrations. This is
rather a popular problem. The clubfoot, medically
called Talipes Equinovarus, is one type of
deformation that can be identified. The cause of
the clubfoot is unknown, occurring in one out of
every 1000 births, and affecting boys twice as
often as girls. The foot is bent towards the side
in clubfoot, making the deformed foot, arm, and
leg narrower and shorter than the usual side of
the baby's foot, arm, and leg. Such a deformation
must be treated immediately, or it may cause
further complications as the child grows older
and continues to walk. Do you want to learn more?

  • Cleft foot is a more severe but rare foot
deformity, or partial adactively. A cleft extends
into the foot in this unusual hereditary
deformity, creating a "break" or "lobster claw."
Treatment requires surgical repair, which can
enhance the foot 's function as well as
appearance. Another foot deformity is called
cavus foot. The foot has an unnaturally high arch
in the cavus foot which causes too much weight to
be placed on the ball and heel of the foot when
    standing.
  •
  • Other problems and deformities, including
hammertoes, calluses and ankle sprains, can
result from cavus foot. It may be caused by a
variety of medical conditions, including cerebral
palsy or stroke, or may be a structural
hereditary abnormality. Many of the therapies
used to treat cavus foot are orthotic products,
specialized shoes, and also foot and ankle
braces. Surgery is to be used as a final resort.

  • Shortening the metatarsal bones, or toes, is yet
another common foot deformity found in many
people. The shortest metatarsal found in such a
deformation will normally be on the fourth toe of
both feet. The fourth toe shortening can cause
discomfort and rubbing in shoes, and may even be
uncomfortable to look at. The most common
treatment for metatarsal bone shortening is bone
    lengthening surgery.
  • Many other deformities in the foot are less
    severe. Another, called calcaneovalgus, involves
a sharp bending of the foot at the knee, causing
the foot to move upwards and outwards, often
reaching even the shinbone. In a baby born with
condition, normally no treatment is needed, as it
will correct itself. For another foot deformity
called metatarsus adductus, the front portion of
the foot bends inward, forcing a child to step
backward with the toes turned. This is also a
disorder that typically corrects itself as the
child develops, while specialist shoes may be
needed to assist in walking for a period of time.
