Effects of Stevia on Oral Health
Almost all of us love consuming sweets, either
occasionally or regularly. Undoubtedly, our

Experts say we develop a sweet tooth when we
continuously crave sweets, such as candy,
cookies, cakes, and chocolates.
What is Sweet Tooth?
Even if we reach for a handful of gummy bears
instead of chips, we have a sweet tooth. We
often feel that our meal remains incomplete
without a piece of sweet or some dessert. It is
because we developed a sweet tooth.
3
How Does Consumption Of Sugar Affect Our Oral
Health?
When we have a sweet tooth, we tend to over
consume sugar. Our mouths contain several
varieties of bacteria, which feed on sugar. When
the bacteria in our mouth feed on the sugar, they
produce acid as a by-product. The
sugar-feeding bacteria in our mouths collect deep
in the pits, nooks, and crannies. They cling to
the teeth in the biting surfaces in the form of
plaque. The deposition of plaque produces acid
and lands on our enamel, causing cavities.
4
Stevia and Stevia Products
Although a plant product, stevia, unlike sugar,
does not contain any traces of sugar and
calorific values.
It is a natural sweetener and a sugar substitute
extracted from the plant Stevia rebaudiana,
local to Brazil and Paraguay.
Stevia and its products are entirely different
from natural sugar.
People have been using stevia for centuries from
sweetening beverages, such as yerba mate tea,
and remedies for hypertension. Besides, stevia
has incredible benefits in reducing cavities.
5
Can Stevia Cause Damage to Our Teeth?
Tooth decay, such as cavities, results from the
metabolism of fermentable carbohydrates, such as
sugar, by certain species of bacteria residing in
our mouth. Although stevia is sweet, it is free
from fermentable carbohydrates. Studies
conducted stated stevia products as nonacidic,
and therefore, it supports our oral health.
6
Is Consumption of Stevia Safe?
Today, we find several varieties of sugar
substitutes available in the market. With the
rise of sugar substitutes, we are becoming
concerned about their safety.
The commercially available sugar substitute
passed through researches and testing. The FDA
considers most highly refined stevia products as
safe for our overall health.
7
Surprising Benefits
  • Stevia and stevia products offer maximum benefits
    to patients who have diabetes.
  • Often doctors develop a diet plan for diabetic
patients, including stevia as the most preferred
    substitute for white sugar.
  • Having no traces of sugar, stevia does not remain
stuck to our teeth, and therefore the bacteria in
our mouth does not feed on the sweet stevia and
    cause cavities.

8
Conclusion
Though stevia extracts are less harmful to our
oral health than refined sugar, we need to
practice consuming a healthy diet and restricting
sugar intake. Unfortunately, when it comes to
maintaining our oral health, vital hygiene and
consumption of healthy food is the only option.
Furthermore, following a regular oral health
routine and consuming a healthy diet are also
essential.
