2
Keep your smile bright by avoiding sugary
beverages that invite tooth decay and enamel
erosion.
3
What Happens When Enamel is Worn Away
4
Normally, your saliva promotes a balance in your
mouths environment.
5
When you drink carbonated drinks, your mouth gets
more acidic, saliva cant keep up its buffering
function and more calcium is dissolved than
replaced.
6
Because children and young adults have newer and
weaker enamel, their teeth are more susceptible
to the damage caused by sugary and acidic drinks.
7
When tooth enamel is worn away, teeth become
stained and cavity prone.
8
Carbonated Soft Drinks
9
Sugary soft drinks destroy teeth both by causing
decay and by erosion.
10
Both diet and regular contain citric and
phosphoric acids that wear away tooth enamel.
11
Sports drinks, while seeming like a safer
alternative, are also sugary and acidic and may
be even more damaging to teeth.
12
Fruit Juice
13
Whole fruit has more fiber, less concentrated
sugar and, in some cases, less acid than juices.
14
If you need to drink juice, read labels carefully
to make sure it does not contain added sugar.
15
What You Can Do Prevent Damage to Enamel
16
The most obvious way to avoid the damage would
be, of course, to avoid drinking sugary beverages
altogether.
17
To protect your teeth, drink them with a meal,
since exposure time is shorter and food helps
neutralize the acids.
18
Use a straw to keep acid and sugar from having
too much direct contact with teeth, and swish
water around your mouth afterwards.
19
Dr. Nielsen provides preventive care, including
protective tooth sealants and annual fluoride
treatments.
