Title: Ls crankshaft reluctor wheel
1WHAT DOES AN ENGINE'S RELUCTOR WHEEL DO?
One of the issues that come up when users install
their own LS engines or create their own LS crate
engines is the LS Reluctor Wheel or the Timing
Wheel.
The LS crankshaft is where this toothed wheel,
also known as the crankshaft position plate, tone
wheel, or LS reluctor wheel, is located. The
crankshaft position sensor receives a precise
readout of the crankshaft's location in relation
to the engine from the plate, which is pushed
onto the crankshaft. It enables the LS1 engine
to be operated by the vehicle's PCM or ECU as
effectively and strongly as feasible.
Although LS engines share a lot in common, they
can be broadly divided into Generation III and
Generation IV models. These models differ in a
few ways, but the reluctor wheel is a significant
one that affects how one is installed in a car.
A magnetic sensor installed on the outside of the
block
2close to the starter reads the reluctor, which
rides on the rear of the crank and is also
referred to as a tone ring or timing wheel. LS
RELUCTOR WHEEL VERSIONS After reading the teeth
of the wheel, the magnet sends precise crankshaft
position data to the Electronic Control Unit.
The Gen IV engines (LS3/LS9/LS7, and later LS2)
were equipped with a 58x wheel to provide the
ECU with more accurate crank position data as
opposed to the Gen III engines (LS6/LS1/LQ4 and
early LS2) consisting of 24x (24 teeth).
Why then is any of this significant? Because the
reluctor must be compatible with your ECU in
order for your engine to operate High-performan
