Title: Design Thinking

1
Design Thinking and Innovation-
Dr.Raju Hajare, DeanEngineering , GU
2
What is Design Thinking (DT)
  • DT is a comprehensive(broad) customer oriented
innovation approach that aims to generate and
develop creative business ideas or entire
    business models
  • DT attempts to implement Project Designers
    approach onto business process.
  • DT Approach is applicable to all kinds of
    business ideas Product or Service

3
What is Business
  • Commercial activity engaged in as a means of
    livelihood
  • The activity of making, buying, or selling goods
or providing services in exchange for money
  • Why One should do Business

4
Design Thinking
  • Integrative Approach Process of problem solving
is considered together with its framework
    conditions.
  • Problem Analysis and Solution are considered
systematically and holistically in the form of a
    process.
  • Various experts for problem analysis and solution
development are involved and exchange their views
  • The working environment is designed to promote
    creativity

5
Design Thinking
  • Three Ps of DT People, Process, Place
  • People Human Centric Approach
  • Process Problem Solving Process
  • Place Working Spaces
  • must be considered for a successful idea
    development.
  • Fourth P is Partnership Large number of people
are to be involved in the development and
    implementation of ideas.

6
Design Thinking
  • Focuses on Early Customer Orientation
  • - DT starts with people and not with Technology
    or Business Goal.
  • - Customer (User) have decisive influence on
    Go/Stop decisions in the process.
  • - Traditional methods of market research deliver
    often disappointing results.
  • Emphasizes on Empathy The first step in DT.
  • - to put oneself in the position of
    customer/user to observe in detail.
  • - this approach creates Customer Orientation
  • - Prioritize development to satisfy needs
    of customers

7
Design Thinking
  • Make ideas Tangible ( realizable) at early
    stage
  • Prototypes must be created as quickly as
possible (for both product or service)
  • It is not about testing fully finished product,
    but the opposite.
  • Individual functions/features/characteristics or
activities of the product/service offer are to be
    checked by the customer.
  • The Prototype should be as simple as possible and
    as meaningful as necessary
  • Ex Concept Cars, Cardboard Model of a flat etc.

8
Design Thinking
  • Consists of frequent Iteration Loops
  • Return to Previous Phase is Not Mistake but is
    Learning Success
  • Failure is Integral Part of DT process
  • Tolerated, accepted and expected by all
    participants
  • Fail Fast to Succeed Sooner
  • Fail Early, Fail Cheap

9
Design Thinking
  • Pay attention to Diversity of Participants
  • - Combines Interdisciplinary Breadth and
    Technical Depth

10
Design Thinking
  • Engineer - Technical design aspects
  • Natural Scientist Impact of design and product
    on nature
  • Humanists Takes human factors into account
    like behavioral, emotional, physical response
    etc.
  • ex- ergonomic design(people's efficiency in
their working environment) of any product

11
Design Thinking
  • First Gen Mouse Ergonomic Mouse
  • One of the First Products developed used DT
    approach

12
Design Thinking
  • Social Scientist - provides insights into the
    different ways individuals, groups, and
institutions make decisions, exercise power, and
    respond to change.
  • Economists - study the production and
distribution of resources, goods, and services by
    collecting and analysing data, researching
    trends, and evaluating economic issues
  • Diversity Includes Difference in Age, Gender,
    Affiliation, Experience, Personality (Introvert
    /Extrovert).

13
Design Thinking
  • Creates Team Oriented Creative Working Spaces
ME spaces for individuals, and WE spaces for
    team work.
  • Spaces are flexible and inspiring.
  • Advisable to choose different locations, rooms,
furniture set-up for various DT phases to create
    new atmospheres.

14
Design Thinking
  • Combines Analytical and Synthetic Phases.
  • Analytical Phase collecting, organizing,
    evaluating info.
  • Synthetic Phase - developing, testing, improving
    solutions

15
Design Thinking
  • In Analytical Phase Problem is analyzed in
detail. The focus is on What?
    And Why? the Problem is.
  • Analytical Phase is known as Problem Space
  • In Synthetic Phase Firm solutions are developed
    and tested.
  • Here focus is on How? Problem can be
    solved
  • Synthetic Phase is known as Solution Space
