Leukemia Treatment

Description:

If your spleen is enlarged, your doctor may advise you about specific blood cancer treatment that needs to be taken. Additionally, your doctor might recommend splenectomy or radiation therapy. • What Causes an Enlarged Spleen in Leukemia?
  • In leukemia patients, cancerous blood cells can
travel through the lymphatic system or
circulation and enter the spleen and other organs
such as the liver and bone marrow. The spleen may
enlarge due to the uncontrolled reproduction of
these aberrant blood cells. Leukemia patients
frequently develop an enlarged spleen, but those
with chronic leukemias are more likely to
experience it, hence making leukemia treatment
    imperative.
  • Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) Over half of all
people with CML will have an enlarged spleen due
to the disease. The spleen becomes massively
enlarged, which is a prominent feature. An
enlarged spleen may also be the only symptom
    during diagnosis.
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) A larger
spleen may develop in people with chronic
    lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). However, this
condition is much less common than cyclical
myelogenous leukemia (CML). It is a typical early
sign of the hairy cell leukemia subtype. The
lymph nodes, liver, and spleen may quickly swell
    when the disease advances.
  • Leukemia can also cause the liver to expand. Some
hallmarks of leukemia are infrequent and enlarged
lymph nodes, swollen liver, and spleen. ALL
T-cell subtypes are often responsible for the
thymus's swelling a small organ behind your
    breastbone.

  • Some Symptoms of an Enlarged Spleen
  • When a person has chronic myeloid leukemia, their
spleen can enlarge. This occurs on occasion and
usually doesn't cause any symptoms, which could
cause delays in the leukemia treatment. About
half of people with CML have an enlarged spleen
when diagnosed with the disease, but 40 to 50
    do not experience any symptoms.
  • When there are symptoms, enlarged spleens may
  • Cause swelling or tenderness in the upper left
    side of your abdomen.
  • Fullness after eating just a little bit of food
  • Pain in your upper left side that worsens when
    you breathe deeply
  • An inability to feel your spleen through your
skin because your ribs cover it.
  • See a doctor when you experience these or other
medical conditions that an enlarged spleen might
cause. Please seek emergency assistance if you
feel uncomfortable or have acute pains when
taking deep breaths because an enlarged spleen
could signify something more serious, such as
    leukemia.
