License Description To receive a Certified
Alcohol and Drug Counselor certification, an
applicant must first acquire up to 2,000 hours of
full or part-time clinical counseling experience
(post- Masters degree) working with substance
use disorder or co-occurring disorder clients. A
Master's Degree or higher (or equivalent license)
in psychology, social work, counseling,
psychiatric nursing, addiction science, or
marriage and family therapy with a clinical

This includes completion of 186 education contact
hours, with 180 hours specific to substance use
disorders, and 6 hours face-to-face. Furthermore,
up to 100 hours of direct supervision
(post-Masters degree) specific to the ICRC/AADC
Performance Domains (minimum of 10 hours per
Domain) is required. Once these qualifications
have been met, the ICRC/AADC exam must be taken
and passed and a licensing application submitted
to the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction
Professionals. The accompanying application fee
