The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is
not merely one of the most remarkable collections
of ancient exhibits in the world. The museum,
established by King Charles II in the late 18th
century, has one of the world's best collections
of Greek and Roman antiquities, including
mosaics, sculptures, gems, glass and silver, and
a collection of Roman erotica from Pompeii. Many
of the objects come from excavations at Pompeii,
Herculaneum, and nearby archaeological
sites. Covering the period from two centuries BC
until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, most of
the mosaics are parts of floors or walls from
Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. many have
figures from Greek paintings. The most well-known
are the mosaics from the House of the Faun in
Pompeii.
This includes the Alexander Mosaic, dating from
circa 100 BC, originally from the House of the
Faun in Pompeii. It depicts a battle between the
armies of Alexander the Great and Darius III of
Persia

the Mosaic Columns, lies to the rear of the bars
and shops lining the northern side of the Via dei
Sepolcri.

During the excavations, an amphora was found, a
glass vase double-layered with a dark blue
background and a cameo-engraved opaque white
layer showing Dionysiac scenes.
The columns were completely encrusted in mosaics
with bands of imbrications, floral ornament and
small decorative figures. After their discovery,
the columns were subsequently removed

The mosaic in the I Pompeian style portrays the
meeting of seven philosophers. Each of them is
wearing the characteristic robe of Greek orators
and philosophers of the classical period, except
one who is also wearing a chiton. The third from
the left might be Plato. In the background it is
possible to recognize the acropolis of Athens
with the Parthenon. The theme clearly refers to
the literary and philosophical interests of the
owner of the villa and probably derives from a
late-Hellenistic model
Plato's Academy mosaic was created in the villa
of T. Siminius Stephanus in Pompeii, around 100 BC
