Sporotrichosis

• Identification of S. schenckii
• Yeast form may be difficult to demonstrate in
  tissue
• Yeast grown in vitro at body temperature on BHI
  blood agar are small ( 2-4 ?m)
• They tend to be oval or elongated and produce a
  single bud
• Buds are often elongated (up to 10 ? m) and
  referred to as cigar bodies

• Identification of S. schenckii
• S. schenckii grows as a mould on SDA at room
  temperature
• It is a relatively fast growing mould for a
  classical pathogen
• Young colonies may be white, glabrous, and
  yeast-like but become wrinkled, leathery, and
  then velvety later on

• The initial white colony tends to turn darker as
  conidia form
• Some isolates even produce dark brown to black
  molds

Sporotrichosis

• Identification of S. schenckii
• Multiple teardrop hyaline conidia develop
• the mycelium is branching, septate and very
  delicate, 2-3 um in diameter. The pyriform
  conidia, 2-4 um form a typical arrangement in
  groups at the end of a conidiophore resulting in
  a delicate flower-like arrangement called
  "daisies"
