1
Deeper Still
  • Disciplines of the Deeper Life

2
The Discipline of
Quieting
3
What Quieting is Not
  • 1. Quieting is NOT about emptying your mind.
  • (Psalms 12) His delight is in the law of the
LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.

4
What Quieting is Not
  • 1. Quieting is NOT about emptying your mind.
  • (Joshua 18) Do not let this Book of the Law
depart from your mouth meditate on it day and
night, so that you may be careful to do
    everything written in it

5
What Quieting is Not
  • 2. Quieting is NOT about meaningless repetition
of a word or phrase that is, chanting.
  • (Matthew 67) And when you pray, do not keep on
babbling vain repetitions like pagans, for they
think they will be heard because of their many
    words.

6
What Quieting is Not
  • 3. Quieting is NOT just the exercise of mental
    relaxation
  • (Mark 135) Very early in the morning, while it
was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and
went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.

7
What Quieting is Not
  • 3. Quieting is NOT just the exercise of mental
    relaxation
  • (Luke 612) One of those days Jesus went out to
a mountainside to pray, and spent the night
    praying to God.

8
What Quieting is
  • Waiting on God in prayer
  • Yearning for the Spirits refreshment
  • Pleading for His mercy
  • Worshipping in His presence

SETTING ASIDE THE BUSYNESS OF THE FLESH TO PURSUE
THE EMPOWERMENT OF THE SPIRIT
9
What Quieting is
  • (Psalms 52-3) Listen to my cry for help, my
King and my God, for to you I pray. In the
morning, O LORD, You hear my voice in the
morning I lay my requests before You and wait in
    expectation.

10
What Quieting is
  • (Psalms 631-8) O God, You are my God, earnestly
I seek You my soul thirsts for You, my body
longs for You, in a dry and weary land where
there is no water. I have seen You in the
sanctuary and beheld Your power and Your glory

11
What Quieting is
  • (Psalms 631-8) Because Your love is better than
life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise
You as long as I live, and in Your name I will
lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as
with the richest of foods with singing lips my
    mouth will praise You

12
What Quieting is
  • (Psalms 631-8) On my bed I remember You I
think of You through the watches of the night.
Because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of
Your wings. My soul clings to You Your right
    hand upholds me.

13
Quieting is
  • Learning to Yearn
  • after God
  • with all our hearts

14
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • Cry 1

15
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 815) For you did not receive a spirit
that makes you a slave again to fear, but you
received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we
    cry, "Abba, Father."

16
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • 1 In our quietness, learn to cry to Him as a
child to a Father, Abba, Father
  • without fear

17
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 816-17) The Spirit Himself testifies
with our spirit that we are God's children. Now
if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of
    God and co-heirs with Christ

18
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • Cry 2

19
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 822-23) We know that the whole creation
has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth
right up to the present time.

20
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 822-23) Not only so, but we ourselves,
who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan
inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as
sons, the redemption of our bodies.

21
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • 2 In our waiting, learn to cry to Him as
    creation yearns for its Creator
  • without reserve

22
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • Cry 3

23
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 826) In the same way, the Spirit helps
us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought
to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes
for us with groans that words cannot express.

24
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • 3 In our praying, learn to cry to Him in our
weakness by the groans of the Spirit
  • without pretense

25
Learning to Yearn
  • Three Cries of Romans 8
  • (Romans 827) And He who searches our hearts
knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit
intercedes for the saints in accordance with
    God's will.
