Gods Presence
  • The Discipline of Practicing Gods presence
    acknowledges two basic truths
  • GOD IS PRESENT BECAUSE HE IS GOD AND THIS IS HIS
    CREATION.
  • HE CALLS US TO MAKE HIS PRESENCE FELT IN OUR
    EVERY DAY.

Gods Presence
(Psa 911) He who dwells in the shelter of the
Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
  • (Psa 1611) You will show me the path of life
in Your presence is fulness of joy at Your right
hand there are pleasures for evermore.

(Heb 135-6) Because God has said, "Never will
I leave you never will I forsake you." So we say
with confidence, "The Lord is my helper I will
not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
(Deu 3327) The eternal God is your refuge, and
underneath are the everlasting arms.

  • (Jonah 11-3) The word of the LORD came to Jonah
son of Amittai "Go to the great city of Nineveh
..." But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed
for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he
found a ship bound for that port. After paying
the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish
    to flee from the LORD.

Running from God
  • Observation We cannot run from God, no matter
    how hard we tried
  • (Amos 519) It will be as though a man fled from
a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered
his house and rested his hand on the wall only to
    have a snake bite him.

10
Running from God
  • Observation We cannot run from God, no matter
    how hard we tried
  • (Jer 2323-24) "Am I only a God nearby,"
declares the LORD, "and not a God far away? Can
anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see
him?" declares the LORD. "Do not I fill heaven
    and earth?" declares the LORD.

11
Running from God
  • Observation We cannot run from God, no matter
    how hard we tried
  • (Psa 1397-10) Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence?...

12
Running from God
  • Observation We cannot run from God, no matter
    how hard we tried
  • (Psa 1397-10) If I go up to the heavens, You
are there if I make my bed in the depths, You
are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if
I settle on the far side of the sea, even there
Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will
    hold me fast.

  • But did Jonah know that?

  • Observation We cannot run from God, no matter
    how hard we tried
  • (Jonah 18-10) They asked Jonah, "Tell us, who
is responsible for making all this trouble for
us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What
is your country? From what people are you?"

  • (Jonah 18-10) He answered, "I am a Hebrew and
I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made
the sea and the land." This terrified them and
they asked, "What have you done?"

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.

  • (Ezek 3331) My people come to you, as they
usually do, and sit before you to listen to your
words, but they do not put them into practice.
With their mouths they express devotion, but
their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.

  • (Mat 158) "These people honor Me with their
lips, but their hearts are far from Me."

Knowing it isnt quite the

  • Observation
  • (James 122-25) Do not merely listen to the
word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it
    says...

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.
20
Running from God
into
  • Observation
  • (James 122-25) Anyone who listens to the word
but does not do what it says is like a man who
looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking
at himself, goes away and immediately forgets
    what he looks like

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.

  • (James 122-25) But the man who looks intently
into the perfect law that gives freedom, and
continues to do this, not forgetting what he has
heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what
    he does.

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.

  • LESSON 2 FROM JONAHS DIARY
  • IF I SAY HES PRESENT, ILL ACT LIKE HE IS

Knowing it isnt quite the
same as acting on it.

No More Running
  • (Jonah 111-17) The sea was getting rougher and
rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to
you to make the sea calm down for us?" Pick me up
and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it
will become calm. I know that it is my fault that
this great storm has come upon you." ...

24
No More Running
  • (Jonah 111-17) Instead, the men did their best
to row back to land. But they could not, for the
sea grew even wilder than before. Then they cried
to the LORD, "O LORD, please do not let us die
    for taking this man's life

25
No More Running
  • (Jonah 111-17) Then they took Jonah and threw
him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. At
this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they
offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to
Him. But the LORD provided a great fish to
swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish
    three days and three nights.

26
No More Running
  • Observation God is present in the storm, in
the calm or in the fish
  • LESSON 3 FROM JONAHS DIARY
  • EVERYTHING TELLS ME
  • REMEMBER HIM.

27
No More Running
  • (Eccl 121, 14) Remember your Creator in the
days of your youth, before the days of trouble
come and the years approach when you will say, "I
find no pleasure in them." For God will bring
every deed into judgment, including every hidden
thing, whether it is good or evil.

Remember
Him
