  • Contact Before Work 5 min
  • Quiz on the Reading Assignment 10 min
  • Brainstorming/Affinity Process 30 min
  • Assignments 5 min

15
Brainstorming - Affinity Process(slides K - 4, K
- 6 and K - 5)
  • PurposeTo organize large sets of items (more
than twenty items) into smaller sets of related
    items
  • Steps
  • The rules of brainstorming are followed but
each idea is written on a self-adhesive Post-it
    note or card.
  • After all the ideas have been generated and
entered on the Post-its, post all the Post-its on
a wall or floor or board or lay down flat on a
table. Discuss the Post-its to check if there
are any duplicates or questions about what any of
    the Post-its say or mean.

16
Brainstorming - Affinity Process
  • Steps (continued)
  • Team members now SILENTLY move the Post-it notes
around, grouping notes that have an affinity,
    together.
  • If disagreement exists when grouping, make copies
of the contested note place it in more than one
    group.
  • When the grouping has stopped, discuss each
grouping to determine what it is that relates all
the notes. Write a header card for each group
that captures the theme and feeling of the notes.
  • If there are single idea notes that do not fit
well with the other ideas, have the team decide
    if they should be kept.

17
Brainstorming and Affinity Processes(see slide K
- 4 in the Orange Workbook)
  • Purpose
  • To organize a large set of items into a smaller
    set of related items.
  • Guidelines
  • The rules of brainstorming are followed but each
idea is written (in 7 words or less, including a
    noun and a verb) on a self-adhesive Post-it note
    or card
  • Team members silently move the Post-it cards
around to form closely-related idea groups
  • If disagreement exists when grouping, make copies
of the contested card and place in more than one
    group
  • Label each group with a header card which clearly
identifies and reflects the theme of the cards
  • If there are single idea cards that don't fit
well with the other ideas, have the team decide
if they should be kept (they may be excellent
ideas thought of only by one person)

piece of paper, all the colors you can think of
that start with the letter B, e.g., blue.
  • Share your colors with your team ( 4 min )
remove duplicates using the Boggle method
  • one person reads all of their colors while others
    toss out duplicates
  • the next person reads their list while others
    continueto cross out duplicates
  • repeat until each team member has read his/her
    list
  • count the number of team ideas and list the
    number.

19
Brainstorming - Some Practice (contd)
  • Each team member use your list ( 4 min )
  • and Osborns Check List to generate more
    ideas.
  • When you have completed this task, count and
    list the number of ideas.
  • Each team, move round robin ( 4 min )
  • and use Random Stimulation to generate more
    ideas for one item.
  • When you have completed this task, count and
    list the number of ideas.

20
Affinity Process On Colors
  • Perform Affinity Process ( 5 min ) on your set
    of colors.
  • Prepare to report out and list by team ( 5 min

  • depth of categories (vertical thinking)
