2
Introduction
  • You are in space
  • You are the/a ________. (sun, moon, earth,
    star.)
  • You are on a mission to gather facts about a
    celestial body in the sky.
  • Suddenly you see some kind of a creature in a
    silver spacesuit floating around!
  • You need to tell this creature about yourself
before he lands on you! Would it be safe for
him to land on you? Why? Why not? What could
you do to help him? Could you harm him? How?

3
Task
  • You will be working in groups of 4. A 5th grade
student or parent volunteer will help you. You
will be assigned to a group named for a
celestial object. One group will be the sun, the
    moon, the earth, the stars.
  • Your job is to work together to find information
about your group on the web sites listed.. Each
person in your group will find information about
one property size, shape, color, texture. Make
sure that each of you understands what you learn
    about your group.

4
Process
  • Each team will role-play the sun, moon, earth,
    and stars.
  • You will search the websites to find facts about
    the object you are role-playing.
  • Then you will complete a web using these facts.
  • You will need to visit sites and find information
about the property that you have been assigned.
  • Then you will go to Kidspiration and type your
    information in the web.

Process2
  • Later on, you will take the information in your
web and use it to write a story telling the space
creature why he should visit you or why he should
not.. Be sure you give lots of reasons and give
the space creature lots of details about your
qualities! Then draw a picture to go with your
    story.

The Teacher Page

Sample student response
  • I am the sun. You had better not get close to me
because I will burn you! I am not as close as
you think. I am far far away. You need to get
to earth! Maybe earth can help you.
  • I am the moon. I am dark and cold. You would not
like it here. You could not breathe.
  • I am a star. Be careful because I look like I
have sharp edges, but I really don't. Maybe I
can light the way for you to get home.
  • I am the earth. You are welcome to come and
visit me. I am nice. I have water for you to
    drink.

12
Evaluation
  • You will be evaluated by the following rubric
  • By talking, drawing or writing, the student
    could

Conclusion
  • Now that you are finished, you have learned lots
about the sun, moon, earth and stars and their
properties! Based on this knowledge, you should
have been able to convince the space creature to
visit you or to stay away! You can now share
your pictures and stories with the kindergarten
    class!
