Title: Cell Membrane

1
Cell Membrane
  • Structure outer layer of cell, made of a double
    layer of lipids
  • Function
  • 1 Protects the cell from environment
  • 2 controls what comes in and out of the cell
    (oxygen, food, carbon dioxide, minerals)

2
Cell Wall
  • Structure rigid layer of nonliving material
(called cellulose) / Outer Layer of Cell
  • Function
  • 1 protects cell
  • 2 gives support

Plants Only
3
Nucleus
  • Structure large, oval structure in center of
    cell, contains genetic information (chromosomes)
  • Function control center of cell, brain of
cell that directs all the cells activities

4
Cytoplasm
  • Structure gelatin-like fluid, broth of the cell
    that holds everything together
  • Function all activities and structures are held
    within the cytoplasm

5
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
  • Structure network of passageways around the
    nucleus
  • Function carry proteins and other materials
from one part of the cell to another

6
Ribosomes
  • Structure attached to the outer surface of the
    ER, floating in cytoplasm
  • Function act as factories that produce proteins
and send them to the Golgi Bodies

7
Golgi Body
  • Structure Flattened sacs and tubes (look like
    pancakes)
  • Function receive proteins and other materials
and send them throughout the cell
  • (like mailroom packaging center)

8
Chloroplasts
  • Structure large green structures containing the
    pigment chlorophyll
  • Function captures Energy from the Sun to make
    Food
  • (Photosynthesis)

Plants Only
water carbon light glucose oxygen
dioxide
9
Mitochondria
Structure small rod-shaped organelles Function
Produce Energy for the cell to carry out
functions (Cellular Respiration)
Plants and Animals
glucose oxygen water Chem E
carbon dioxide
10
Vacuoles
  • Structure large, round water-filled sacs
  • Function Storage area for water, oxygen,
    carbon dioxide, food

Mostly Plants
11
Lysosome
Mostly Animals
  • Structure small, round structures with
    chemicals that break down food
  • Function vacuum cleaner that breaks down Food
    and old cell parts

12
Similarities
  • both are made of Proteins, Carbohydrates, Water,
    and Lipids
  • nucleus, ER, Mito, GolgiB, cytoplasm
  • ribosomes, cell membrane
  • undergo Cellular Respiration (need/release E)
  • regulate what comes in and out of the cell
    membrane
  • All cells made of the same elements
  • (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen)

13
Differences
  • Plant Cell Wall, Vacuole, Chloroplast
  • Plant function makes its own food
  • (photosynthesis)
  • Plant Shape Box or Brick like
  • Animal Lysosome
  • Animal function some cells move
  • Animal Shape no distinct shape
