Legislative Leader
  • The President must work with Congress in order to
    get anything done.
  • The President can influence legislation through
    party members in Congress, telephoning members,
    or making speeches on T.V.

  • Three ways in which the President may influence
    legislation
  • 1. State of the Union Address - the President
    sets forth goals of the administration
  • 2. President submits a budget - recommends how
    the government should raise and spend money
  • 3.Special session of Congress - to consider
    urgent matters

Role as Party Leader
  • President becomes the party leader after being
    elected
  • The President tries to help party members through
    appointments to various govt. jobs
  • The President makes personal appearances to
    support party members running for election.
  • The President considers the goals of the party as
    well as the country.

Role as Judicial Leader
  • The President can
  • 1. Appoint federal and Supreme Court judges
  • 2. Grant pardons
  • 3. Issue reprieves
  • 4. Grant amnesty

Role as Chief of State
  • The President represents people from all 50
    states.
  • The Presidents role as Chief of State is mostly
    symbolic.
  • The President meets with leaders of other nations
    that usually involves speeches and ceremonies.

Conclusion
  • The President has many responsibilities, as you
    now know. Perhaps most important, however, is
    that he or she represent all of the people of the
    U.S. and is the one symbol of our unity.
