3
Principles and objectives outlined in unit guide
  • To assess the effectiveness of adopting National
Curriculum Framework of thinking skills across
    school.
  • To develop a common problem-solving approach
across the school (for use within curriculum and
    pastoral areas).
  • To identify relevant Thinking words for use
    within departments/subjects.
  • Objective - to analyse effective thinking
strategies within our different subject areas.

4
Objectives agreed by group
  • To identify how to develop thinking skills in the
curriculum and to pilot appropriate skills in
    certain subjects.
  • To determine feasibility of adopting NC thinking
    skills and problem-solving approach, throughout
    school.
  • To pilot thinking skills approaches and determine
    which are successful

5
Actions undertaken
  • Each faculty to identify thinking words relevant
    to their subjects./ALL
  • Pilot De Bono 6 Hats and thinking skills to
specific modules of PSHE and RE
  • Relate NC thinking skills to specific modules of
  • of DT, Photography, Textiles./DJT, JRP, ARC
  • ARC to run short INSET session on DeBono 6 Hats
  • How the school could develop this with
progression what would next steps be?/CAH
  • Presentation to staff should explain terminology
and be succinct with 5 key bullet points.

6
Key findings
  • Application of thinking skills in lessons
successful however, poor provision of support
    materials for developing and teaching
    progression/mastering thinking skills.
  • 6 Hats, Plus/minus, AID all easy to adopt but
other techniques require time and training for
    teachers and students.
  • Much of the thinking skills already
    incorporated in some subjects/curriculum eg
    Cre/Arts, CDT.

7
Recommendations
  • To make STRIDE model common practice at GAS
    (included in HW diaries).
  • To add effective techniques, symbols for thinking
strategies onto digitalbrain for teachers to
    access.
  • To share examples of thinking skill activities
which make effective starters for lessons on
    digitalbrain.
  • Common thinking words and NC table to be
    displayed in all classrooms.
