Social Role Taking Empathy
  • Soc.-cognition development is related to growth
    of role-taking skills
  • The ability to understand a persons thoughts,
    feelings, motives, and intentions and to assume
    his/her perspective is role-taking behavior

Stages of Social Role Taking 4-5 stages
  • Pre-scholars (3-6) are Egocentric.
    Unaware of any perspective
    other than their own Called egocentric and
    undifferentiated perspective/stages
  • Primary years (6-8) Recognize that other people
    can have perspectives different from their own.
    BUT their reasoning is, that other people have
    different information, that is why they differ in
    their perspective.

    Social-information Role-Taking Stage

  • Self-Reflective Stage (8-10)Capable of putting
    themselves in some other persons shoes. Realize
    differences in perspective ( possible conflict)
    can/does occur However they cannot consider their
    own and other persons perspective simultaneously
  • Mutual Role-Taking Stage (10-12) Can
    simultaneously consider his/her own and anothers
    perspective Can assume perspective of 3rd party
    and reason from it.

  • Social Role-taking is complete when Social
    Conventional System Role-Taking occurs
  • -You understand the perspective of others in the
    relationship/situation.
  • -Can compare their own viewpoints to others in
    social systems/situation
  • -That is they realize when their viewpoints are
    in or out of line with the social group
    can/may modify to be in line with social
    group/systems perspective.

Emotional Role-Taking
  • Occurs early
  • Infants can in fact experience emotions of other
    people
  • Babies experience exhibit distress when they
    see others experience certain distresses
  • Does not mean they are reacting sympathetically

  • They are egocentric only identify to extent
    that they would feel distress in that situation
    (unable to generalize)
  • Knowing what you know about social-cognition
    social role taking, how would you children

  • First graders are playing with a ball on the
    playground Jim/Jill kicks the ball which
    strikes Sam/sally in the face. Sam/Sally is
    angry, a fight erupts.
