• Enjoys painting or drawing figures, faces,
  profiles, eyes, hands, limbs
• Applies her energetic vigorous color and drawings
  lines to form the human figure that she hand
  builds over a year long process
• Frey pasted away at age 70 in Oakland, CA on July
  26th 2004

• I think technical things, you can teach. I think
  you teach because the students need something.
  Otherwise they would just be out there with no
  direction or anything, so you have some power as
  a teacher
• Who makes originals ever?
• I came from Lodi, a background where there was
  none. They didnt even know what art was. They
  didnt know it was something "you shouldnt be
  doing." I was able to do anything I wanted
• You have to be an artist to survive. Thats one
  thing I learned. A lot of extraneous things were
  eliminated because of that. I learned how to
  concentrate on doing my work.

Purpose

• Viola Freys main goal when making her art is to
  make larger then life sculptures of men and
  women. They are ordinary, thinking, reflective
  beings who gaze out at the world while their
  faces reveal an inner life marked and lined by
  matters of consequence.
