A Party going nowhere?
  • In elections held in 1928 the Nazis won 12 seats
    in the Reichstag.
  • Despite their efficient organisation and
    campaigning only 2.7 of voters voted for them.

The Wall Street Crash
  • Following the Wall Street Crash in 1929
    unemployment began to rise in Germany.
  • More and more people began to vote Nazi.
  • In the 1930 elections the Nazis gained 107 seats
    in the Reichstag.

July 1932
  • Unemployment hit the 6 million mark, 17 million
    were dependent on the dole.
  • In the July elections the Nazis polled 37 of the
    vote making them the largest single party in the
    Reichstag with 230 seats.
  • Hitler demanded the Chancellorship but Hindenburg
    refused saying the Nazis were too violent. He
    appointed Von Papen instead.

November 1932
  • Von Papen was unpopular.
  • He could not gain the support of the Reichstag.
  • Further elections were held in November.
  • The Nazi vote like unemployment had peaked and
    had begun to fall to 196 seats.
  • Hitler was in despair.
  • Hindenburg still refused to make him chancellor
    and appointed Von Schleicher instead.

  • Von Schleicher was no more popular than Von
    Papen.
  • Industrialists wrote to Hindenburg urging him to
    appoint Hitler who was popular with the German
    people.
  • The army warned there could be a civil war
    between the communists and the Nazis.
  • Von Papen persuaded Hindenburg that Hitler could
    be tamed.
  • Reluctantly Hindenburg appointed Hitler on the
    30th January 1933.
