Who Is the Program For?
  • People who have a disability
  • Between the ages of 18 and 65
  • Are socially isolated in their homes
  • Have the potential and willingness to make
    decisions for themselves

Step One
  • Self awareness.
  • Building a trust relationship with the ILRC
    leisure education consultant.
  • Discussing activities that you would like to be
    involved in or interests you would like to
    pursue.
  • Looking at the barriers that are holding you back
    from participating.
  • Discovering what you need to get motivated so you
    can get out and try new things.

Step Two
  • Community awareness.
  • Discovering the opportunitiesthat are available
    in the community.
  • Exploring issues of accessibility and
    transportation.
  • Learning how to get involved in the interests of
    their choice.
  • Investigating ways that they are able to
    contribute to their community.

Step Three
  • Community involvement.
  • Exploring new places, activities, programs, or
    courses with the option of a volunteer leisure
    buddy to go with them.
  • Working toward greater independence and
    graduation from the leisure education program.

Before I went through the Leisure Education
Program, all I did was sit at home and watch TV.
Now I am volunteering feel really good about
myself
I thought my life was over when I had to start
using a wheelchair, but I found out I can still
do lots of things.

Leisure Education has really helped my
self-confidence. I used to feel like such a
burden to everyone, but now I have gone back to
school am involved in swimming I feel like a
whole person again.
