Malaria
By Rottana D. Soth
2
Malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite
pathogen.
3
The genus name for malaria is Plasmodium. There
are 4 type of species name for malaria that can
effect human, Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium
vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae.

Image shows the Protozoans of the genus
Plasmodium.
4
Malaria ingests parasites that are found in
blood. Within a week the mosquito can pass to
another person. The parasites enter the liver
then into the the livers cells, which grow and
multiply. It leaves the liver and enter the red
blood cells that takes at least 8 days or as many
months. When in the red blood cell, the cell
burst and attack other red blood cells, which
make a person fell sick because of the toxin it
releases. Symptoms begins 10 to 4 weeks after
infection, but a person may feel ill as early as
8 days or up to a year.
5
Symptoms
The symptoms of malaria are fever, nausea,
shaking chills, pain in the joints of your back
and abdomen, headache, and abnormally large
spleen, it may repeat for at least two to three
days. If it affects your kidneys then the amount
of urine is low and if it affects your brain you
will lose consciousness. Malaria is fatal in
about 20 cases, if the fever and chills is
especially intense. These symptoms are happening
because of the parasite that has enter your liver
and red blood cell.
6
Prevention of the disease?
  • Visit health care for 4 to 6 weeks before
foreign travels for vaccinations and prescription
    for anti-malarial drug.
  • Take anti-malarial drug without missing doses.
  • Prevent mosquito and other insects that bites.
Use DEET insect repellent spray around where you
    sleep.
  • Wear long clothing.

7
How is the disease treated and/or cured?
The cure for malaria is to take your prescription
drugs. There are different drug and length but it
depend on the type of malaria is diagnosed, where
you are infected, age, and how ill he or she was
before the treatment. Also, try to prevent other
bites from happening.
8
How common is the disease in the U.S.? Other
parts of the world?
Malaria has at least 300 to 500 million cases a
year and more than 1 million people had died from
this disease. About 1,200 cases with people being
diagnosed a year in the U.S. These cases in the
United States are highly in immigrants and
travelers that has come back from malaria- risk
areas, from the sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian
subcontinent, and Asia.
9
Malaria is a disease that is caused by a
protozoan parasite. It has four type of species
that effect humans (slide 3). Malaria takes about
10 to 4 weeks before the symptoms begin or after
infection. The cause of you getting sick is when
the parasite get into your blood and liver,
because the parasite grows and multiply in the
liver and the red blood is full of toxin that
would eventually burst. Symptoms may repeat at
least two to three days, but it depends on the
parasite that is causing the infection. There are
anti-malarial drug that can prevent you from
malaria and also visit your health care for
vaccinations or prescription. Anti-malarial drug
or prescription can also be the cure for malaria,
but it has different drug for different kind of
malaria. Malaria is estimated up to 300 to 500
million cases a year and more than 1 million
people had died from this disease. People mostly
infected with this disease is people that likes
to travel to places like Asia, Indian
subcontinent, and sub-Saharan Africa.
