Adding and Subtracting Decimals

• Adding and subtracting decimals is most commonly
  used when dealing with money. Money that comes
  in to your account and money that goes out of an
  account.
• If you know how to add and subtract whole
  numbers, than you know how to add and subtract
  decimals. The only difference between the two is
  the decimal point.
• Here is a step by step guide to help you be
  successful.

Step 1

• Take your problem and write it so that the
  decimals are line up. Remember, I should be able
  to put a box around the decimal showing that it
  is line up.
• Ex 4.63 2.8
• 4 . 6 3
• 2 . 8

Step 2

• Add a zero to missing place values so that the
  numbers are even.
• Ex 4.63 2.8
• 4 . 6 3
• 2 . 8 0

Step 3

• Add or subtract as the problem dictates. Ignore
  the decimal for right now and treat the numbers
  as whole numbers!
• Remember to regroup as necessary when adding.
• Remember to borrow as necessary when subtracting.

• 2 . 8 0
• 7 4 3

Step 4

• To make your answer complete- slide the decimal
  place down into the answer. Again, I should be
  able to draw a box around the decimal in the
  answer all the way up to the original problem if
  your numbers are line up properly.
