  • Slave Codes strict rules governing behavior and
    punishment of slaves
  • Puritans, Quakers, and Mennonites anti-slavery
  • Slavery was one reason for the economic success
    of the Southern colonies, especially the
    Tidewater area
  • As indentured servants (people whose passage was
    paid to America in return for 4-7 years service)
    became fewer, the labor shortage caused an
    increase in slavery.
