PHILOSOPHY THROUGH FILM LIT
2
  • SKEPTICISM The philosophy that genuine knowledge
    is unattainable.
  • S1 George Washington was the 30th president of
    the United States.
  • S2 2,256,717 is a prime number.
  • S3 I am dreaming right now.
  • The first skeptics lived in ancient Greece in the
third and fourth centuries B.C. a generation
    after the death of Aristotle.

3
  • Sextus Empiricus, who lived from 175-225 A.D.,
was one of these later skeptics who defined
    ancient skepticism.
  • Skepticism first died out in the Middle Ages. It
reemerged in the 15th and 16th Centuries with the
religious and scientific revolutions in Europe.
One who started to study skepticism in this time
was the famous mathematician Rene Descartes
    (1596-1650) (day-cart).
  • Cogito Ergo Sum

4
  • George Berkeley (1685-1753) Did not agree with
skepticism, so he decided to disprove it with his
own theory. He held the view that our perceptions
give us direct experience with objects.
  • Idealism To be is to be perceived. If we
perceive that something exists, that makes it
real because objects really only exist in our
minds. Objects are not out there.
